With big expectations i made a topic about 2012, which turned into piece of crap...it would be unfair not to have topic about one of the truly most awesome movies around as well...so here we go

The only reason it was good was the effects. It shouldn't win an Oscar, because in the next 10 years, every movie will look this good.

That means nothing. I don't want fucking 3D, give me a good movie anyday. If there was a vid of me taking a shit in 3D would that be good just cause it's 3D? I don't think so.

I agree with Elio.

The Oscar for best movie should go to the best movie storywise and not to a special effects movie.

Avatar should of course win the Oscar for Best effects.

But none of them will be the first pioneer...

I like the fact that James Cameron commented that only when he saw 2001: A Space Odissey, he realised that he wanted to be a director...

It's sad that even if he was inspired by such a groundbreaking movie [a REAL pioneer btw], he didn't do more than just great effects.
Avatar is the equivalent of those technical metal bands that just like to masturbate their instruments.

@Mr. Doctor: An insightful comparison, didn't think of it myself.

Actually, my hatred towards the movie has diminished and left me only with slight annoyance. Still damn shame this thing is so popular, just shows the bad taste of the majority, I guess. I kinda liked the main villain, though - I mean the military guy - it was so overthetop and clichéd that it even seemed amusing a bit.

I am going to see Ferngully now, instead. Fairies are cool.

It's a good movie, especially with the 3-d. If I watched the movie at home, i'd probably give it a 7 but at the theatres maybe an 8.5 just because of the visuals. I think the visuals added a lot to the movie.

Avatar has impressive visuals, but the story is ripped-off and the characterization is non-existent. With movies, I don't care how many explosions there are or how much action there is. If the story is hackneyed and there is no characterization, I am unable to enjoy it. It's similar to my deal with video games. I don't care how pretty the graphics look. If the gameplay is bad, I'm unable to enjoy it.

I really liked this one. The point is in the story and NOT in the effects.
I know it is not the most original story in the world, but has achieved the point.
Our world should be based on balance and love towards the nature and all the living beings, and not in material possetions and greed.

And the paradox at the end of the movie, he relinquished his human form to actually become a 'human' .

Ahem... sorry.
I'd been waiting for this film ever since I saw the shorts online, and for once, I really wasn't disappointed...
Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting anything above the special effects driven 3d spectacular, which, completely floored me. For once I was just in total suspension of disbelief, and when you go in expecting a special fx extravaganza, (and it is..) and yet manage to be immersed in the world created.
Loved the creature concepts and the whole neural braid thing, the story was pretty simplistic but I think the narrative was executed well, I didn't really find a dull moment in it. Great message and all, maybe felt slightly overhanded to me, but then I'm overly cynical. I read a lot of sci-fi and I found myself entirely satisfied by it, except it should have been called "Now Die Michael Bay". Honestly, the way he raped Transformers. James Cameron just knows how to stage your classic satisfying "Boss Fight" sequences, where the immensity of the task and battles of the lead character ramps up and up, each "Boss" getting harder than the last... I guess I'm showing my game nerd roots here... But I meant the level of satisfaction of seeing each obstacle overcome, and the building of that wanting of satisfaction is such an art in moviemaking that is lacking in the action genres of today.
And it is an action movie. But damn Cameron does it well. I'll even forgive him for making the Titantic, since it seems that he poured most of the earnings into this film.heh.and seems to have avoided the massive "cheese pits" that Michael Bay seems to love throwing into his movies. It has trappings of philosophy and whatnot, not as much as the Matrix, but still, it's just a cool way to enjoy the ride. As the godlike Keanu says "It's for kids!" (quoted from the making of Matrix doc, after everyone else in the cast wanks philosophical about it all...)

And I won't admit to growing up quite just yet.

This movie takes a lot of shit from some people for it's not too original screen play. But then again, I left feeling good after watching it, it's epic.
