People like Serj Tankian have earned their stripes in the metal biz, and don't need much of an introduction.

...But that's no guarantee for success.

I went into this with an open mind, but after the first couple songs i was actually waiting for it to be over. I guess i was expecting they happy lunacy of his last album, as well as looking forward to this being a darker album.

This is awful.

It's a radical shift from Elect The Dead to this, but it's meant to be, I read somewhere that this is what he wanted to initially do with Elect The Dead but it ended leaning towards SOAD's trademark sound, this might be awful for some but it has to potential to surprise other people in its eccentricity and experimentation, SOAD fans might be disappointed with this but this is exactly what he had to do to properly affirm his solo act as completely different and separate from SOAD musically.

Sorry I just wanted to clear up for people visiting this page, give it a try.

I tried listening to this a couple of times when it came out and I just didn't understand it. It's not as visceral or energetic as Elect The Dead, nor as easily comparable to System Of A Down, and I already found Elect The Dead an interesting but ultimately somewhat hollow riff on the System that I was missing; this was too unusual and indirect for me, so I remembered it as vaguely disappointing and confusing (and absolutely none of its content).

Randomly listening to it for the first time in 16 years, I'm enjoying it a surprising amount. Now I think it benefits from being less obviously "the Serj half of System"; there's much more depth in the compositions, and even though there aren't any songs that immediately grab me the way that "Empty Walls", "The Unthinking Majority", "Sky Is Over", etc. still do, my new first impression is that overall it is the stronger album, or at least the more consistent album and more successful at achieving its goals. I like the weirdness of it and the esoteric applications of traditional and electronic instrumentation. There's a lot more genre experimentation going on here and I think that's something that complements Serj's voice very well.
