Overkill - I Hear Black

I actually really love this album! Its different for them, but most of the songs are killer to me.

I also love this album. They tried something different and it worked IMO. Or at least it works for me.

This reminds me a LOT of Doom stuff...that's why i love this album...in fact, this album was my beginning on the search for Doom Metal bands...that's why is so special, ....and so underrated! :\

Worship to Spiritual Void

I really like the guitar tone on this album. Shades of Gray is a definite stand out track for me. I like it's dark and foreboding riff. World of Hurt is another good one. This album is a departure from their thrash roots to a more groove oriented sound. Not a bad album though .Spiritual Void is also a nice jam. Overall a pretty solid effort.

Just starting to explore Overkill's discography more outside of the bona fide classics, and chose this one at random without realising it was one of their lowest rated. I can see why this would be the case, but I don't necessarily think the stylistic change is a terrible thing - I think they pull it off fairly well for the most part, it's just a stark departure from the previous few albums which usually leads to backlash from fans. For me there is a pretty clear influence from the groove metal trend of the time - Pantera were at the height of their powers, bands like Corrosion of Conformity were transitioning their style, and of course the Big 4 had slowed things down as well. I can see the doom/Sabbath comparisons that others have mentioned but it really feels like the groove was the focus here, which obviously carries those influences as well, but implements them within a thrashier framework.

Anyway I was honestly just surprised no one had mentioned Pantera when talking about this album, so wanted to throw in my two cents. I don't think this is a bad album by any means but I definitely prefer their faster stuff at the end of the day.
