Way back in 2006 Ahab released The Call Of The Wretched Sea, a crushing funeral doom album based on Herman Melville's novel "Moby Dick". The album went on to win the Metal Storm Award in the Extreme Doom Metal category. So how would 2009's follow up, The Divinity Of Oceans stack up? For starters, the nautical theme continues with this album. The Divinity Of Oceans is based on "The Loss Of The Ship Essex, Sunk By A Whale" by Owen Chase and Thomas Nickerson. The book is about the horrors suffered by the crew of the Essex after the ship was sunk by a whale? some 20 sailors spent 90 days floating around the South Pacific, thousands of miles from home and hundreds of miles from land in small wooden boats. The book was also the inspiration for the climactic scene of "Moby Dick". Read more ›› |

This record is as brilliant as its predecessor. Getting caught between the haunting atmosphere and the crushing riffs is akin to being caught between Scylla and Charybdis. And just as deadly.

This was when the Post-rock and the Funeral Doom where in perfect balance ... The Giant was sort of a disappointment after the brilliance of their first couple of albums.

Posts: 7959 Written by InnerSelf on 07.02.2015 at 21:21 Calling it disappointment will be harsh. The Giant was a good record but you use to have a flavour of The Divinity Of Oceans. Not your problem, anyone saying The Giant was bit letdown is expecting much higher than their predecessors. Intially, i got to be in same camp as disliking new Ahab but later I realized it isn't bad at all.

Not nearly as captivating as their debut. While partially due to the instrumentation, I thick the lackluster production is mostly responsible.
