Under this weird title is one of the less known album from Iron Maiden's singer solo career, and maybe this can be explained by the fact it is far from the best-known Chemical Wedding & Accident Of Birth, released just after.

It is really completely different: while the latter is heavy & loud, Skunkworks is a soft, nearly a pop-rock album. The line-up is also different (but the same as Alive In Studio A, 1995): Alex Dickson on guitars, Chris Dale on bass, and Alex Elena on drums.

Any preconceived notions of what to expect from the (then ex) lead singer of Iron Maiden should left at the door; this is an album that puts a lot of sonic distance between him and his erstwhile bandmates. If you take this album for what it is, a collection of experimental alt-metal tracks created by a man with a point to prove, with a gang of young musicians willing to lend their talents to one of the best voices in metal; you will truly appreciate what you're hearing.

Can't understand why this has a lower rating than the previous solo Dickinson album, since both are just as good as each other in my opinion. That said, I personally think both albums are the weakest in the Dickinson solo career. They're pretty good albums on their own mind you, and "Skunkworks" is essentially an upbeat, if not entirely consistent work in its own right. There are plenty of upbeat, explosive songs here, but not quite enough to make this album match up to the likes of "Accident of Birth" or "Tyranny of souls". Qualitative comparisons aside, I really liked how the average song length on "Skunkworks" is shorter than on "Balls to Picasso" and makes for less of a filler-based structure. My personal highlights are 'Back from the edge' and 'Inside the machine'.

Those are not so good as rest and votes can be subjective ...

Honestly this album goes through one ear and out the other for me, none of the songs are super memorable and the production sounds tinny as hell. It's not the worst album ever but it's not one I'm going to remember too much of after listening to it and I'm just itching to get to Accident of Birth after this.
