Giant Squid is a band that has been emerging in the metal scene as of late, and after a generally well received EP in 2011 and the success of The Ichthyologist, I figured a review for their first work, Metridium Fields (a re-release anyways) was in order. In a nutshell, this album is varied, unique, and surprisingly good.

Might have to revisit this band at some point. The only release of theirs that I like is the Cenotes EP, which I think is brilliant.

That's the only one I've heard... and it's indeed brilliant. Almost afraid to check the others because of that.

From my vague memory this is the best Giant Squid release. Haven't listened to it in about 5 years though.

I regret giving this a 9 when I reviewed it, looking back after many more times listening to it I have trouble picking out any flaws.

So you think you should have scored it higher?

Yeah... It's been a while since I read it but if I recall correctly my main complaint in the review was some of the songs weren't as good as the best ones and the title track was too long. But now I have come around to thinking each song offers something different and the title track is actually a very good length, so I can't really say much negative about the album anymore.

I think I might still prefer Ichthyologist over this one cause it's more varied, BUT

god I love the atmosphere on here. So melancholic, but also having time for some more fun routes like Neonate and Eating Machine. It's pretty much perfect as is, I just very very slightly prefer the approach of Ichthyologist for some reason. Might change, cause this ends up being more coherent ofc.

If Gord Downie fronted a Post-Metal band with Doom influences.

I've only ever listened to the Cenotes EP and kept forgetting to explore more of their work but if there's even a hint of Hip influence here then I'll bump it up the list.

Well at least to me, the singer reminded me a bit of Gord and I could not unhear that connection haha.

What an immersive atmosphere and fantastic production sound for all the instruments! (I'm listening to the 2023 remaster, so I'm not sure if the remaster is the reason for the great sound quality or if it was like that in the original.) Anyway, I'm really impressed by the entrancing, patient playing, a mix of trippy prog, simple-yet-effective post, and lumbering heavy doom riffs. The mix of male and female (siren) vocals is really good too. Only "Eating Machine" sounds jarringly bad and super out of place. My favorite tracks here are probably "Summit", "Neonate", and the title track!
