Toulouse - Entombed A.D. & Grave: European Tour 2014 by Darkside Momo (5) |
A pure Swedish death metal evening, with Entombed A.D. - that's the LG Petrov fronted version of Entombed - as headliner? Count me in!
First off, I have to warn you. It's been a while since I last shoot concert pics in a venue with my old compact camera, and the resulting pics show I'm rusty, with my outdated material. So, don't expect anything great, the photos are just here for a basic illustrative purpose.
Anyway, off with the ramblings. The Dynamo venue (a great little concert bar in the center of Toulouse) was almost packed (that's 300 odd people), even with a heavy metal show the same evening in Toulouse too (featuring Heavenly and Manigance, who drew about 150 persons)... Rumor has it we had more attending people than the Paris show
Repuked
Well, this was a shitty day for me with delays all around, so I arrived late at the Dynamo and failed to catch the first band, Repuked. It seems I missed some good old school death metal, as most comments about Repuked's perrformance were good; I've also been told that their frontman Rob The Blob (no kidding) was really crazy as fuck, which was certainly a good thing!
For all of you interested, here's their Facebook. Enjoy!
Grave
I remember discussing quite recently with our very own Marcel about Swedish death metal, and we agreed that both Grave and Unleashed can be awfully repetitive - once you've listened to one Unleashed song you know them all, and while Grave may be a bit more varied, all their albums end up sounding more or less the same.
Well, continuing on that comparison, Grave are definitely more varied live, and thus more interesting. Of course they're more brutal, too! However, Ola Lindgren definitely lacks Johnny Hedlund's sheer charisma, which greatly lifts up Unleashed's performances.
Oh well, about this saturday's show? It was some really catchy, hard-hitting classic DM show, as you'd expect from these veterans. Obviously, the audience responded in kind, with a serious mosh-pit going on. Good stuff!
Entombed A.D.
If you'd stumble on LG Petrov on the street, you probably wouldn't even care, as he's one of the most unassuming guys you'll ever meet.
Yet put him onstage, and it's another story entirely. This guy, the one and only Entombed frontman, is a charismatic beast. A friendly one, mind you, who shares his beers with front-row fans while eructing profanities about zombies and stuff.
The band had a mighty lot of fun and were obviously happy to be there. So were we! I can assure the moshpit was pretty intense at times
As for the setlist... As you can see, it was mostly centered around Back To The Front and then mostly old Entombed stuff, including "abnormally Deceased" out of their second Nihilist demo, nothing out of the excellent Serpent Saints, sadly. I have to admit that, while I wasn't convinced by Back To The Front, its songs really get an upgrade in a live setting. Of course, most of us fans acclaimed much more the oldies but goodies
- Pandemic Rage
- I For An Eye
- Revel in Flesh
- Second to None
- Living Dead
- Kill to Live
- To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth
- The Underminer
- Out of Hand
- Wolverine Blues
- Chaos Breed
- Waiting for Death
- Chief Rebel Angel
- Left Hand Path
- Abnormally Deceased
- Supposed to Rot
- Serpent Speech
So without doubts, for all concerned, Entombed A.D. WAS Entombed. The real one. Honestly, I dunno what Alex Hellid - the sole remaining member in Entombed - will do, but he'll have a hard time getting to that level?
