This album just sounds so uninspired to me. The lyrics are often really cheesy but try to sound important. Now I'm someone who listens to quite a lot of power metal so I'm used to cheesy lyrics, but usually the bands realize they have cheesy lyrics and don't try to hide that. Here I honestly feel like they take the lyrics way too seriously; at least that's how I perceive them.
The production is excellent. The guitars sound really good, the drums sound powerful. No complaints here. Matt sounds really good on this record. Strong vocals as you've come to expect from him. But the lack of inspiration in the songwriting and most of the riffs are the things that disappoint me the most. The guitar solos are another part that I think feel dull overall, which shouldn't be the case. A guitar solo should excite you but unfortunately that's not the case here.
It's not a terrible album, it's just after I heard those two songs before the album was released, I expected more. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of people that like it. The album is forgettable for me. If I want to go listen to Trivium, it would probably be Shogun or In Waves. Those are way stronger albums. More consistent and overall more pleasant to listen to.
If I had to use one word to describe this record then it would be "generic". The cheesy lyrics, the uninspired guitars, dull solos - that's unfortunately (wow I'm using that word a lot) how I feel about this album. I assume they tried to find a sound to appeal to an even larger audience but I think it failed.
Overall the album goes by quickly but nothing sticks in your head. These are probably the most disappointing records because you expect to at least feel something while listening to the album. This one, though, didn't make me feel anything. Again, it's not bad, it's just dull. If you would like to listen to any of the songs, I can recommend "Silence In The Snow" and "Until The World Goes Cold". The other songs aren't as memorable.

As I said on the album page, this one is a nice little collection of catchy pop songs. Nothing to take too seriously, just something to enjoy for a little while and then discard.

Ascendancy is pretty good as well. For me it's on the same level as In Waves. In my opinion they haven't made a stellar record yet, but Shogun showed that they have a lot of potential. This album however just feels like they had no inspiration at all. It feels forced in a lot of ways (especially the lyrics). I really hope their next album will be better. They have a lot of potential and it would be disappointing if they don't manage to put that potential in their records. That's also the reason why I'm so disappointed with this record. I know they can do better, they have proven that in the past.
