By 2012 Aborted have established themselves on the metal scene and became an important figure concerning extreme variations of our beloved music. Also the band have found throughout the years their own, unique style. But before the success of recordings such as Goremageddon: The Saw and the Carnage Done or even this year's Global Flatline the band had started off with a typical grind-spiced slab of death metal debauchery.

The band's debut The Purity of Perversion may not be the most original record released by the end of the 20th century, but it certainly does deliver a solid dose of morbid pleasure. On this CD you can find all elements necessary to call a death metal album "good", as Aborted have problems neither with creating brutal, down-tempo parts nor with blast-beated orgy. And they combine these elements surprisingly well. The first tracks make an impression as the band had many ideas, which was also a good forecast for the future of the band. But to be honest, somewhere in the middle of this record the feeling goes from "wow, this still sounds fresh, and boy do they have an imagination!" to "well, I've heard it before". And it wouldn't be too bad if I thought I heard it from another band, probably better and widely recognized, but the Belgian commando copy their own ideas which makes The Purity of Perversion slightly repetitive. Okay, I realize that they wanted to stick to a specific genre, but they could at least recompose some of their tracks or enrich them a bit so they would be more diverse.

Another thing is the vocalist, Sven "Svencho" de Caluwe. He was the founding member of the band and it's been pretty much since the beginning Sven + some random people in Aborted. On The Purity of Perversion he also showed a wide variety of skills that any death metal frontman should own as he goes smoothly from your standard scream to black metal shriek to guttural growl, sometimes even pig squeals. Also, he writes pretty fucked-up lyrics, definitely for all the gore-loving perverts.

Even though it is not the best record Aborted has delivered (which only shows that the band's made progress since their debut), it is still one solid death metal album. It might be repetitive at times, but generally it is highly enjoyable and worth recommending.

This album's rather underrated considering it has some of their grooviest work on it. Personally my favorite Aborted release is Engineering the Dead but this album still has a ton of great riffs and features some of their most brutal tracks ever. The fact this album is a debut makes it all the better in my opinion.

I just keep going back to this record. There's something about the raw production and the growled vocals that changed considerably on the next records. I think I can safely say that "Act Of Supremacy" is my favorite song by Aborted.
