"Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" asks Lana Del Rey. Will you still love Young And In The Way when they're no longer young and hardcore? I ask you.

I'm personally embarrassed and don't know how to answer that question, because YAITW gave us nothing but uncompromising, angsty, rebellious blackened hardcore in I Am Not What I Am. Their imagery, the banner that holds their name above the stage, their looks, all of that coherently screamed youth and despair. However, very little of that primitive crust punk is to be found as one progresses through When Life Comes To Death.

Is that from where the title and cover take all their meaning? The opus starts with a sharp D-beat stab, gets on with nothing more than an unoriginal third wave black metal sound with crusty flakes, and ends with a bleak ambient moment. Now, if I stop being a dog of the female gender for a moment, I can admit the band knows how to play that already-heard-before black metal. There are bursts of pure hatred here and there, as if life weren't ready to drop that blade in the cover, but I can only imagine myself gripping the knife and poking them with it instead. Just a wee bit, just the tip, to make them play nastier.

Before doing that, I'll let you decide if this is the Young And In The Way you prefer. The one that matured, writes longer, safer, cleaner black metal songs that leave room for emotional moments, and even a beautiful acoustic piece. Or the one that reeks of sweat and hormones, has too much bottled up inside and needs to show you how much it hurts by hitting you in the face.

What should I do with that knife? Make up your mind, here.

Aww, it's missing a certain reference I was hoping to see. Good review nonetheless. I'll get round to it at some point.

Haha. Thanks, but yeah that would have been very misleading. There is still that other one that I'll be sure use in the future . On that note, I wonder how this album plays live, because we'll get to see them at Temples. Here's the black metal element everyone was asking for.

Eh, I'm still holding out for Ruins of Beverast, Svartidaudi and Oranssi Pazuzu =P

I think I remember liking I Am Not What I Am when it was released. Very loud and energetic - and very short, lol. I will check this out for sure. Great review young lady, and thanks.

It's a pleasure. This one is pretty much the opposite of I Am Not What I Am. In itself it's a good album, but if you're only expecting something similar to the previous, you might be disappointed.

I really like the band name so I listened to bits of it.

Musically not my cup of tea - too much black metal. The hardcore bits are cool -but there's not enough of them. It sounds alright though but it's the kind of stuff I can tolerate in 1-2 songs slabs before I need to listen to something major label circa 1980-99.

Good review though.

Thank you! They have a very strong and unique aesthetic I think. I love their band name, logo, covers, and even the lyrics aren't uninteresting. But you pinpointed it, not enough hardcore in this one. If you're interested in shorter songs with a more explosive, crusty approach by the same band, you can try the album I mentioned, I Am Not What I Am. There's still a good chunk of black metal in that one though, I know you hate that. Same link, just a click away, on your right.
