An American band that plays good black metal? There are not many, and even though Sannhet orchestrates what certainly can be labeled as "hipster" black metal (had to say it), they are pretty unique in that they have no vocals. Think Deafheaven, Altar Of Plagues or Regarde Les Hommes Tomber but without the desolate, shrieking and chthonic black metal singing. Do not fret, however, because these Brooklyn, New Yorkers certainly instill tremendous aura and an atmosphere that is allegedly discernible by metal music fans with keen ears and acute sensibilities.
Revisionist is the follow-up to Sannhet's brilliant debut LP Known Flood and progresses the band even further. The sound created by this three-piece band is deeply-rooted in black metal but is cross-pollinated with post-rock, grindcore, industrial and shoegaze. Experimental to say the least, Revisionist adds a pinch of something not really found in Known Flood: melody. Melody can be that one piece of the puzzle, the one missing link that vaults bands into popular and accessible uncharted territory. The framework is dissonant and anomalous created by noisy textured guitars associated with post-metal clutching hands with tight bass and drumming. The production and mastering is perfect, illuminating the crust-punk and sludgy qualities featured in this style of extreme music. Revisionist may require some patience, with all of the genre-mixing, but hitting the replay button will make this 35-minute ascension eventually reveal itself and the reward well worth it.
Sannhet are doing things the right way. Improving on every subsequent release, the style of music they are imprinting on the metal music scene is loaded with a diversity of sounds which ultimately lead to a surfeit of feelings and emotion. The immediate and fundamental result is something entirely more atmospheric and original than most post-black metal albums I've delved into. I get instantly hooked by this kind of music and Revisionist is a very intelligent, creative and innovative album that will be high on my AOTY list for 2015.

I'd assume this was what you wanted me to edit. Sorry, man, but glad someone else helped you out! Good review, I really loved the debut, but I just have to point out a few things here... 1. I'm with Rod, to say there aren't many good American BM bands is really indicative of an unawareness of American BM. WITTR, Leviathan, Judas Iscariot, Arizmenda, Nachymstium, Murmur, Falls Of Rauros... I could go on. I'm not sure if that statement reflects your distaste with a lot of American BM or not, but even from an objective standpoint, there are plenty that are considered as quite formidable within the international scene as a whole right now. 2. The term "hipster" black metal. I'm pretty sure you're not using it negatively, so no beef with you, but I know a lot of people use "indie BM" or "hipster BM" in an almost derogatory way to refer to black metal that is boldly innovative or experimental. Ya know, just the maintenance of that "trve and kvlt" bullshit. Just a personal pet peeve of mine.... god forbid the music evolves beyond the stale and rather rigid confines of the bands that originally spawned it into a fresh and new identity for itself. 3. I have never heard any grindcore influence in Sannhet whatsoever, but then again I haven't listened to this one yet, so things could possibly be different here?

I really just do not like this style at all, and despite sounding like a genre douche, I hate that it is called BM. There are tons of bands out there that have played this type of music that were content to call it other things, but one day some guy makes it just a touch harsher and decides he knows what BM is. That aside, there are some standouts in this niche. I particularly appreciated the latest Bosse de Nage. The amazing drums and emotive vocals made up for my usual prejudice. Also some standout moments on Moonlover. Sannhet didn't really do it for me though.

I guess I should have said "this type of black metal" - type meaning "hipster" or "gazey" or even "post-black". I really can't think of many American bands doing this type of BM really well, I am in love with this "sound" at the moment. Lantlos, Alcest, This Social Coil, Les Discrets, An Autumn For Crippled Children, Harakiri For The Sky...all of them are over in Europe. 2. I think "hipster" shouldn't be taken negatively - it's fine for describing what this genre movement is right now - I just don't like to use it. 3. There are bits of grindcore here and there ...maybe the blast beat drumming and quick time changes in some of the songs. Abrasive, crust punk type stuff.
