The other day I was searching through my list of reviews, when I got struck by the large amount of little squares with small red D's in them (meaning death metal for those who don't know yet). This sight got me all down and depressed, and I spent the whole day after that roaming and moaning about the fact that I'm now a heartless barbarian, unable of joy, love or tenderness, doomed for social relationships... You can imagine then how I was looking forward to the next package of cds I would receive, with high hopes of having something mellow that could prove to the world that I am not an ice-cold brute. First cd I see, Dementor, what can it be, maybe some melodic heavy, or a sympho stuff a la Nightwish? No way, of course I'm the most unlucky person on the earth, Dementor is brutal death (again). I am definitely a barbarian because I am not even disappointed.
After this useless introduction, let's talk a bit a bout this God Defamer that I'm listening to now. Comes from Slovakia, fourth full-length album, plays brutal death metal, mmmhh, just like almost every band upthere, yes technical stuff, lots of good solos, rhythm changes and breaks, the drummer is simply amazing... Sounds a bit common doesn't it? I'd be wrong to stop here and turn my back on it, though, and so would you. Right, Dementor suffers from the inherent disease to brutal death which is the lack of originality, all the songs kind of sound a bit the same, but still God Defamer is a good album that doesn't have to be jealous of the best productions in the style.
The mastermind Rene Blahusiak devoted his flesh and blood to this album, you can hear it. He tried hard to create technical, easily accessible and catchy songs (the best example being the killer 'Harvester Of Christian Souls'), and for once, the budget allowed by Osmose has let him use the servicesof the Stage One Studio and of Andy Classen (Krisiun) as a producer. The result is the most professional album Dementor has ever released, the production is simply perfect and gives another dimension to the songs.
Brutal death fans, this one is for you, if you like Vader or Morbid Angel (some of their influences undoubtedly), you should like Dementor. Seriously, they are almost at the same level as the great names of brutal death. God Defamer is a ground-breaker, nothing less. And it's still better than the last Deicide.
