Lads, Google it, it's Gene Simmons who says Rock And Roll is dead.
Swedish Sunset Strip-loving sons Crazy Lixx have in recent years been suffering the effects of cabin fever hangover since the Covid lockdowns, as they haven't been their usual selves since Forever Wild. With an at-best passable effort in Street Lethal and the rather unnecessary and confused Two Shots At Glory, the band looked to have lost their way in a haze of hairspray and high heels. Crazy Lixx have seemingly found their footing again with Thrill Of The Bite, giving fans their fix of modern glam metal through bombastic choruses, guitar gymnastics and gang chants.
Momentum seems to be the separating factor in modern glam metal; with a scene packed with competition and old hands giving fans a heaping dose of nostalgia, it's important for visibility’s sake to perennially be on the front foot. Crazy Lixx looked in danger of falling back into the midst of a cramped pack and subsequently getting lost in the shuffle. Thrill Of The Bite won't be the separating factor that sees them lead the pack, but it will help put some wind in their sails and distance between other bands in the shuffle.
Playing to their strengths, tracks like "Highway Hurricane" indulge in the upbeat melodic metal that Crazy Lixx have built their reputation on, the kind of music that will worm its way into your brain and have you singing along near instantly. "Midnight Rebel" drops the tempo but ups the melody, making for another highlight that will have you tapping your hands along to the beat. Both tracks, among a host of others, have a heaping dose of flashy guitar showmanship courtesy of Lundgren and Olsson, who keep the 80s rock star vibe alive.
Main man and multitasker Rexon wears many hats in Crazy Lixx, from singer to producer, to songwriter; ably putting his talents to good use, he ensures that Thrill Of The Bite is well produced while his own performances are some of the highlights, such as on "Final Warning".
While it is an enjoyable listen, Thrill Of The Bite doesn't offer much in the way of being unique, nor enough in terms of quality, to warrant repeated listens; it is just another good release in a competitive genre. It won't disappoint you when it does come on, but it doesn't offer much of a case to actively seek it out.
Putting the band back on the right track, Thrill Of The Bite is an enjoyable listen, but not much more than that: a fun listen when it comes on, but not one that demands your attention beyond that.
