Twilight Force is like observing a seesaw where Clever and Epic try to balance with Absurd and Exhausting. The seesaw never ever balances out, instead jumping up and down across all their albums. At times one side has enough weight to keep the other from reaching the solid ground. Other times, it's like observing a tug of war between a digital symphony orchestra versus a metal band over who owns the songs. It's not fun, it's brutal, where nobody wins but all have their blood vessels burst in the epicness: the band, orchestra and listener.
I do not remember a single thing from a listen through of Twilight Force's albums. Not a single melody, chorus, riff or solo was left in my brain. The breather moments are there, but not enough to keep the adrenaline levels at healthy levels. At times the music is so high-spirited that it lifts you up, but then keeps crushing you against the ceiling, until your mouth fills with the blood as the Epicness of Major Scale destroyes with the wide cheerful smile of the Psychopatic Hero of Might and Magic. For competition's sake, one could speedrun a fantasy RPG, but to hear how it SOUNDS is both clever and absurd. Hence the seesaw.
Twilight Force is not background music you could just put on. It's a musical score of fantasy film, where every song is the Final Cathartic Ending Song, With Big Ass Crescendo. This "all or nothing towards Wintervale!" approach makes the band an utterly exhausting listening experience, unless you sit in the orchestra house and enjoy it as a play about wizards on meth and barbarians hit by lightning.
This debut, Tales Of Ancient Prophecies, is not so rushed, not so clogged in the epicness as the others. It's dynamic and diverse in a way and in places you can recognise. The symphonic samples and plug-in tools are used with taste to serve the songs, not to overcome the power metal core of the band. Still today, it makes the other releases obsolete.
