In the world of music, saying farewell rarely means goodbye, rather see you in a few years, and while technically Aerosmith only hung up their wings from performing live, it felt like an end given the band's decision to quit making albums after 2012's Music From Another Dimension. As such, it was surprising to see the band reverse course in 2025 and release new material. This alone is something I wouldn't have believed had you told me this back in January; add in the fact that Yungblud appears to have been the source of this change of fortunes, and I would have called you mad.
Well, the saying goes that as one door closes, a window opens, and this proves to be the case, as it was after Tyler and Yungblud's performances at Ozzy Osbourne's farewell at Back To The Beginning in July that this collaboration came to be. While it saw the closing chapter for one legend, it added a new, almost bonus-like, chapter to another's.
The biggest talking points have focused on whether Aerosmith could still pull it off, especially after their retirement-cum-apparent hiatus, and whether Yungblud's inclusion was just a gimmick. The answer to the first, in short, is yes, the latter, a resounding no. Aerosmith sound revitalised and produce some of their best work in decades, while Yungblud not only fits in, but excels, evaporating any doubts you may have had. From the harmonising vocals between Tyler and Yungblud on "A Thousand Years", to the trading leads on "Wild Woman", both complement each other perfectly. While the rest of Aerosmith very much take the backseat as a result, they craft and perform the background to these tracks well.
Albeit a scant five tracks, One More Time is a shot in the arm for Aerosmith, and classic rock, fans, and a reminder that old hands can still produce some of their best work later in their careers. "My Only Angel" is perhaps the best song the band have released since "Jaded", one of the few tracks they have put out this side of the millennium that will earn its spot among greatest hits compilations put out by the band. The second is the remake of "Back In The Saddle"; thanks to the modern production afforded to it, it sounds so powerful and vibrant that it eclipses the preceding three tracks. While the EP is bookended by its best songs, those found in between are still very much worth re-listening to.
Say what you like about Yungblud, but he fits like a hand in a velvet glove on One More Time; the man can indeed walk this way.
