Good, but not memorable?
Is not that often that you listen bands that offer mellow, light and quite enjoyable music. This was one of those days, and the band in question is Grave Flowers and their sophomore effort "Incarcerated Sorrows" out on Firebox Records, and if you know this label you might know already what kind of music we're dealing with.
Heaviness is not the main attribute of the band, so what? Who said all has to be brutal and relentless? Grave Flowers play in the style of late Katatonia albums, specially "Tonight's Decision", although I consider these guys more textured than the aftermentioned band.
Melancholic pieces paired with woeful vocals and catchy arrangements, that's what this band is all about. Songs like the opener "At Night" and the follow-up "Lacrosy" will captivate any lover of emotional, dismal music.
Other stand out tracks include the awesome "Sleep Demons Sleep" and "Save Me Or Destroy Me", special mention to the beautiful crafted lyrics, each one is a poem and paired with the music makes this an interesting experience.
The only downpoint of the album is that, first, this is not really that original, and second, some songs felt like fillers, when I'm listening to this album I can't resist the urge to skip some tracks and listen the songs I'm really into, besides that the album is way too long, it becomes boring sometimes.
Fans of lighter Doom Metal mixed with some Gothic touches and great vocals will like this, fans of emotional music will also find this interesting. And please save your Katatonia-clone commentaries, because this is definitively not one.

We all know Matte Andersson from his famous band Godgory, but perhaps not all of you are familiar with his side project Grave Flowers. In comparison to Godgory, Grave Flowers is more of an attempt towards dark and melancholic music. A better comparison would probably be with their fellow countrymen Lake of Tears as especially that harmonic touch in the music is something that both bands have in common. Read more ›› |
