We all know Matte Andersson from his famous band Godgory, but perhaps not all of you are familiar with his side project Grave Flowers. In comparison to Godgory, Grave Flowers is more of an attempt towards dark and melancholic music. A better comparison would probably be with their fellow countrymen Lake of Tears as especially that harmonic touch in the music is something that both bands have in common.

The new album pretty much continues the same thread that the band started with their debut full length album "Solace Me". Concentrating most of all on the melodic and emotional side of the music without any radical or memorable heavy guitar riffs, the band also takes a clear step on the other side of the line, namely the "non-metal" side, but still keeping one foot on the metal lands.

The clean vocals of Matte Anderson also give the music a very cheesy feeling and in someway almost ridicule the music. Don't misunderstand me - I do like clean vocals (especially in emotional songs, like newer Katatonia for example, because this kind of vocals can give the music a very dark and depressive feeling). Sadly, this cannot be found in the vocals of Matte Anderson, which actually have more of a whiny feel to them.

I'm a big fan of dark, depressive and melancholic music, but I don't like my music to be whiny, weak and cheesy. Thumbs down from me.

Good, but not memorable?

Is not that often that you listen bands that offer mellow, light and quite enjoyable music. This was one of those days, and the band in question is Grave Flowers and their sophomore effort "Incarcerated Sorrows" out on Firebox Records, and if you know this label you might know already what kind of music we're dealing with.
