The Unborn, the second full-length of Mors Principium Est, recorded at Listenable Records and known as the best melodeath album in 2005. Well, Mors Principium Est sounded so damn good in The Unborn it grabbed me at the first listen; undying riffs, very fast/good drumming, and prefect guitar harmonies come along with it. Without much ado, let's step in….

After a surprisingly animated departure with "Inhumanity," the band have burned all paths with the release of "The Unborn," a masterpiece that truly stands far beyond the previous album. "Pure" the first song starts out with very good drumming and fast guitar riffs before continuing with rough vocals. The self titled track, "Fragile Flesh" and "Pressure" are connected and step behind. "Altered State Consciousness" is the album's most brutal track and probably the best but, don't worry, if you want calm songs you have "Spirit Conception," an intro of "The Unborn" full of dark (and a bit weird) keyboards. We find elements of Gothenburg, speed metal, a little Demons & Wizards but also some Tool where they incorporate occasional gothic, clean, female vocals (The Glass Womb) to make this album more authentic and more eccentric. All tracks are flawless except the Megadeth cover - it stands out and sounds really bad; not a surprise because we can't use harsh vocal which always used in death metal to re-release a thrash cover but aside from that, it's wroth-listening. Lyrically, the album speaks about paranormal, supernatural and creation.

I really don't know how much rating could I give, sure it can't be less than 8 but it can easily exceed 9, can it? Well, I think yes, the album contains many good groove catchy songs mixed with nice Gothenburg elements, great harsh/clean singing and some great drumming. I strongly recommend this album to any melodeath fan confident that it will please him.
Album highlights: Pure, Parasites Of Paradise, Two Steps Away, Altered State Consciousness, The Unborn.

i think it's better to just rate overall like in the old days, for example let's take an occasion where you absolutely love an album and everything about it,but also everyhting done in the album has been done before, you can't give more than 7 points in originality, and that drags the overall score which you want to be perfect,i don't think the new system works that well

Well I do think the new system works well. People can see the exact breakdown of how good the album is in parts. Some people might be sticklers for originality, so with the new system, they can see the originality rating. With Black Metal albums too, bad production can make the album sound better. So the overall rating is appropriate.

Do you have to rate every album you review with a 10 in every aspect though, Doc?

Its an OK album....its nothing ground breaking though is it? I would probably give its 7/10 because it has some enjoyable moments and nice songs but still - we've heard it all before...

Of all recent melodic death stuff that's been out only Scar Symmetry has impressed me enough with their technicality and songwriting to rate them more than 8/10 - until such time that we hear something diffferent from MPE im not rating them up there with the best...

Yeah, I suppose. Sometimes it is nice to see some critical analysis though. And not every one of your favourite albums can have a 10/10 rating. Jeff once taught me that 10/10 ratings should really only to the cult albums like Rust In Peace, etc.

Great review, but score is a little too high IMO... If it would be my review, I would rate it a 8 in general and a 8.5/9 for the Melo-Death-genre in specific.

I'm listening to "The Unborn" right now, the only album I know from Mors Prinicipium Est. Pretty sweet album indeed! You can easily recognize some In Flames influences in their sound, but still theiy're quite different and like I said also a great and powerful Gothenburg band.
Some songs I that I found really outstanding were "Pure", "Parasite Of Paradise" and "Pressure"

Looking forward to their upcoming album!

This band puts Scar Symmetry to Shame... I used to think maybe Scar Symmetry was something like this but Scar Symmetry cant touch MPE in any aspect whatsoever. This is music Masterpeice 11/10!
Mors Principium Est Defines good music and all else follows in its wake. I hope the new CD doesnt simplify to gain popularity... Mors Principium Est(Life After Death) Really is divine. After listening to thousands of bands It is extremly rare to find music than can come within the same echelon as MPE... Only the future holds untold musical wonders.

I get sick of reading 9.9/10 or 10/10 reviews. Hurray for the (almost) objective reviewers!

Their debut was much more impressive IMO, this was just an average melodeath album overall, almost all the songs sounded very similar. I'd give this album a 7/10 for the effort in trying to live up to their debut album.

Nothing special about this album just like the previous one. Very generic: most of the leads, drums, and riffs. Plus, man, who called this album the best melodeth release of 2005? This is just ridiculous...

Well I'd have to say it's one of my favorite albums. It's obviously a matter of taste but I find while they aren't bringing a whole lot of originality to the genre they seem to pull it off a lot better than many others. The first album for me was a bit generic and while I liked it at the time I find it doesn't hold up all that well for me anymore. The latest album is really good but not quite the masterpiece that the Unborn is.

TU is such a good album, but it doesn't deserve a 10, even thought it is completely different from everything I've ever listened to. Somehow progressive, very technical, and also melodic. It is a great mixture, but it is far away from perfection. IMO it deserves a 8.5-9
