It's always kind of difficult to review obscure genre mixes like this first output of the German band Lilith Lay Down. The music seems to be more gothic metal than anything else, but there's a lot of other elements mixed in as well. Usually their sound is pretty dark, sometimes heavy and distorted, at other times acoustic and emotional with intricate and progressive songwriting. To equal the mufti-faceted moods and instrumentations, the vocals are high on variation as well, always completing the rest of the music.

Unfortunately the diversity in the songs leads to what's best described as a general lack of direction. I'm not sure if the band members always know where they want to go. In the end the tracks are often pretty interesting while listening to them, but there's nothing really memorable about them at the same time. The absence of easy-to-recognize structures and general dark mood make the whole EP blend together.

I do think that the musicians have quite some talent and that the EP is quite interesting. What Lies Beneath shows that the young German band has a lot of potential and that the full-length they're currently working on (and promises to also include thrash metal elements) could be a good one. For a whole album they should definitely try to concentrate on making the songs easier to digest to avoid the same problems this 25-minute piece already shows. I for one am curious to see if they can do it, because if they can, they might just release a fantastic debut album.
