It Ain't Metal... So What !?

Maybe you're feeling adventurous, I've got something different for you. It's called Punk! It's fast, aggressive, straight to the point, often political and unapologetic. Maybe you'll like it?

In any case, if you're curious, my list should guide you through the essentials & landmarks of the Punk scene. Enjoy!

''Yeah that's right, Punk is dead, it's just another cheap product for the consumer's head! Bubblegum rock on plastic transistors, schoolboy sedition backed by big time promoters.''

Punk is great music,it shaped metal along with rock, but I think punk had a greater influence.

I think anti flag is cancelled. Maybe replace that album with Good Riddance - A Comprehensive Guide to Moderne Rebellion

Really nice list, I have a decent knowledge of punk but it's mostly through post-hardcore so I'll have to try out some of the other stuff in there
Talking about post-hardcore, I don't know whether your list is aiming to cover just the essentials or if you want to make it bigger with time, either way I think it's missing some important stuff in that genre, so here are some recs that I would consider really noteworhty (I'm keeping off the stuff that veers too far into post-punk / screamo / emo / indie rock / whatever and starts sounding too different from "regular" punk music):

Suicide | Suicide | (1977 / Synth Punk / USA)
Magazine | Real Life | (1978 / Post-Punk ; Art Punk / UK)
Contortions | Buy | (1979 / Dance-Punk ; Art Punk / USA)
Wipers | Youth Of America | (1981 / Post-Punk ; Post-Hardcore / USA)
Rudimentary Peni | Death Church | (1983 / Anarcho-Punk ; Positive Punk ; Hardcore Punk ; Deathrock / UK)
Suicidal Tendencies | Suicidal Tendencies | (1983 / Hardcore Punk / USA) I'm surprised you didn't put that one in!
Die Kreuzen | Die Kreuzen | (1984 / Hardcore Punk ; Post-Hardcore / USA)
Big Black | Atomizer | (1986 / Post-Hardcore ; Noise Rock ; Industrial Rock / USA)
Die Kreuzen | October File | (1986 / Post-Hardcore ; Post-Punk / USA) this one is kinda crazy, it sounds like Voivod before Voivod even had that sound
Embrace | Embrace | (1987 / Emocore / USA)
Dog Faced Hermans | Hum Of Life | (1993 / Art Punk ; Post-Punk / UK)
Moss Icon | Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly | (1993 / Emocore ; Post-Hardcore / USA)
Drive Like Jehu | Yank Crime | (1994 / Post-Hardcore ; Noise Rock ; Math Rock / USA)
Unwound | New Plastic Ideas | (1994 / Post-Hardcore ; Noise Rock / USA)
At The Drive In | Relationship Of Command | (2000 / Post-Hardcore / USA)
The Fall Of Troy | Doppelgänger | (2005 / Post-Hardcore ; Math Rock / USA)
Made Out Of Babies | The Ruiner | (2008 / Post-Hardcore / USA)
Midori | あらためまして、はじめまして、ミドリです。| (2008 / Art Punk ; Post-Hardcore ; Jazz?? / Japan)
Think Again | Never | (2012 / Burning Spirits / Japan)
Otoboke Beaver | Itekoma Hits | (2019 / Hardcore Punk / Japan)

Regarding Suicidal Tendencies in particular, I would say their debut isn't quite crossover thrash yet, that's why I put it in my suggestions, but I fully get if you don't wanna include it

Bitchin list! Little too much pop punk for my liking but I'm more of a hardcore guy so I dunno a lot of straight up punk but I'm a fan of a lot of modern hardcore punk. Throwing out recs, mostly hardcore and most of which you probably already know but some modern stuff I really like.

Agent Orange - Living In Darkness
Angry Samoan - Back To Samoa
Crucifix - Dehumanization
Death (Not THAT Death) - …For The Whole World To See
Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!
Disrupt - Unrest
Doom - Total Doom
Drain - Living Proof
End It - Wrong Side Of Heaven
Faith / The Void - split
Fear - The Album
Fugazi - 13 Songs
GBH - City Baby Attacked By Rats
GISM - Detestation
The Gits - Frenching The Bully
God’s Hate - God’s Hate
Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today
H2O - F.T.T.W.
MDC - Millions Of Dead Cops
Mission Of Burma - VS.
Modern Life Is War - Witness
Nausea - Extinction
Negative Approach - Total Recall
OFF! - First Four EPs
Pain Of Truth - Not Through Blood
Poison Idea - Feel The Darkness
Raised Fist - Ignoring The Guidelines
Refused - The Shape of Punk To Come
Rites Of Spring - Rites Of Spring
The Slits - Cut
Speed - Only One Mode
Sunami - Sumani
Trash Talk - 119
Turnstile - Time + Space

Also you have The Stooges debut and Raw Power but I think you should sneak Fun House on here as well. I always thought it was their best one.

I was going to tell you to add this massive list of bands as well but I think the list would go forever, for every essential in the time line there's at least another 15 other bands that could also be considered essential.

Yeah sorry guys if I'm not featuring every band but yeah I'll likely add more over time for sure and I will take all your recs into consideration.

Don't worry man I don't think anyone expects you to listen to / add everything, they're just complements to your already very extensive list!

I'm keeping at it, this time giving the Ska Punk scene a bit of love with the following additions:

- Operation Ivy / Energy
- The Mighty Mighty Bosstones / Question The Answers
- Left Alone / Dead American Radio
- The Interrupters / Fight The Good Fight
- The Suicide Machines / Destruction By Definition

Also added 4 more Canadian hardcore punk acts:

- Career Suicide / Attempted Suicide
- Propaghandi / Support Caste

Its not over yet... Stay tuned!

Leftover crack - mediocre generica
Gg allin - Freaks Faggots and junkies

You could chuck in The cosmic Psychos, the Hardons, and The Chats for that Australia garage punk style, maybe even frenzal romb.

I will definitely add Leftöver Crack there. But I might just shy away from GG Allin lol...

Haha, yeah I guess he's more an essential personality in punk than essential listening.

Vole - Dej Buh Pesti (2019) / Tohle Neni Prdel (2021) / Czech Republic
En Love - Love Will Drown The Nest (2020) / Fled (2022) / HC punk USA
Gulch - Burning Desire To Draw Last Breath (2018) / Impenetrable Cerebral Forest (2020) / HC punk USA
Abuse of Power - What On Earth Can We Do? (2019) / HC punk USA
