Alas, the almighty swamp metal titans Kalmah grace us with their sixth full-length release, entitled 12 Gauge. (Before listening to this album I was immediately turned off by the name of the album.) Ever one to worry about band's changing directions for the worst (see: Cryptopsy's The Unspoken King), the hairs stood up slightly on my neck upon reading the title of an album named after everyone's least favorite gun to use in Counter-Strike - next to the Ingram MAC-10 at least. Needless to say, I was pleased to discover Kalmah continued with their efforts regarding melodic death metal, further establishing themselves as one of metal's most popular and talented outfits.

  It is annoying it think.
The first three kalmah albums were sort of distant and more sublime. From Black Waltz they've become more upto date about what they mention in the songs and cause of this the music has had to change to make everything seem more gritty and rrrr.. Even though songs like Groan of Wind are among some of my favourite by the band..its about a strain of flu. A certain amount of feel has gone, and I can't help but remember how Bodom went crap after they left the strangeness of Something Wild and Hatebreeder and crossed into swearwords during breakdowns.

12 Gauge as the third album of the 'new' Kalmah, so it'll be interesting to see if they maybe get nostalgic and do stuff the old fashioned way. *fingers, toes and eyes crossed*

Absolutely Kalmah will once again be a great band when they'll go back to songs like Hades. Hades... THAT was great Kalmah!
bard - 11.02.2010 at 04:30
Rating: 7 I'm personally fine with Black Waltz Kalmah as well as older, more swampy Kalmah, but their last album however was far too uninspired. For whatever reason the title '12 gauge' makes me expect a little more teenage angst appeal... hopefully it's more crazy fish-man in a swamp, 'get off my porch!' angst.

Forget the songs titles..coz "One of Fail" is one of the awesome songs on this record. The record is superb btw..
moe5512 - 28.02.2010 at 22:09
Rating: 7 Good album, some masterpieces. but the solos arent so good. they sound quite much like Slayer´s solos. Dont get me wrong, slayer is a great band but the their solos is so disharmonic and that doesnt fit in to kalmah´s music. Antti Kokko is a great guitarist but i like the older solos more.
Valaskjalf - 28.02.2010 at 22:52
Rating: 8 Agree with the above post...its a good album but the solos are pretty darn ugly. Yet I do enjoy the album a lot more than their previous 2 efforts and more than "They Will Return" as well - overall Im pleasantly surprised.

Yepp, I have listen to the album for some time now and it's really damn good. I think it's even better then FTR witch I like also. Songs like "One Of Fail", "Bullets Are Blind" and "12 Gauge" are classic Kalmah songs!
AnEpicDeath - 06.03.2010 at 01:18
Kalmah is one of melodic death metal's strongest outfits, and this is currently at the top of the MS charts, and no reviews? WTF?

Just saw the video for the title track. definitely getting my hands on a copy of this one!!
metalh3ad - 28.04.2010 at 23:34
Not at all like some of their older stuff... more melodic, less swampy... especially "one of fail" i really like it though
Uller - 02.06.2010 at 09:48
Rating: 10 I just don't know why this is the kalmah album with less raiting, I think that is one of their best albums of not the best, songs are not as slow as the ones in TBW and the keyboard solos are back, its speedy, songwriting is awesome. etc.
Vikcen - 29.07.2011 at 22:38
Rating: 9 The true it is really very good, but... shame the sound it is a little "batiburrí", hodgepodge, hotchpotch, mess, jumble, etc, etc hahaha, it is the bad thing of this album in my opinion. Luckily you can syntonize it, but in this case "you will need great skill" to get a good sound haha. Well, almost all songs are very good, but some highlights: "Rust Never Sleeps", "One Of Fail", "Bullets Are Blind", "12 Gauge"...
nille - 25.01.2013 at 15:49
Having the ability to put everything on the album .......

The album is very good ......

Good riff of "good melody".

Song number 6 took me to the cross .....
Wes - 05.07.2013 at 07:17
Rating: 10 Coming back to this album after loving "Seventh Swamphony". Damn this band just keeps getting better. Love it.
Northern Danger - 30.11.2013 at 18:49
Rating: 8 Whole album is pretty uneven.....songs like Hook The Monster,12 Gauge and Sacramentum have are awesome imo. But rest of the album is much more weaker. Plus I don't like the production. Good album still.
