It's seems that all of the new members have made for a fresh and reinvigorated Eluveitie album. The last few were pretty good but i felt they had fallen into a bit of a routine.
A damn fine record, Origins and Helvetios were in fact plain generic while this indeed feels fresh and reinvented (well, as much as it could be done in their frame). Fabienne's vocals are charming. Hope she will be given more room in the future.
Eluveitie, now a victim of the music industry. I felt really bad while listening to this, seriously. It was like listening to "folk-oriented Slipknot", if you get what I am implying. From time to time I thought I listened to those silly folk songs that participate in Eurovision. There is not even one noteworthy melody in this release. The strange thing is that it reminds of Eluveitie, but without everything that was good about them. Comparing to every other early release this is a reverse of the quality they had. Albums heavy in melodies and with atmosphere that guided you to a grove. The pagan spirit is away and everything has become a Metalhammer's cover.
This is great, I'm really enjoying this! I thought I was going to miss Anna Murphy when she left but I actually think I prefer Fabienne now - her voice has such a nice earthy tone to it. My only gripe is that they made Ancus a separate song, why not just attach those 11 seconds to Deathwalker? seems silly, but this is also a silly criticism. Stand-out tracks for me after only a few play throughs are Rebirth, Ambiramus and Black Water Dawn.
Edit: Spun this many many times now. Love this album! Deathwalker, Breathe and The Slumber can join that list of highlights for me. Still think Ancus is stupid though and they should have put Ategnatos's intro into its own song instead.
For some reason, I wasn't expecting anything from this one. I even missed the release and gave it a try only last month. But I have to say I'm very impressed. This is turning into one of my favourite Eluveitie albums. Probably 3rd after Slania and Spirit like said above.
