Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2009

Location: Germany, Wacken (Festivalgelände)
Date: 29 July 2009 - 01 August 2009
Website: wacken.com
Organizer: ICS Event Service

Tickets:

SOLD OUT!!

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

Hahaha, I bet they wanted to get the American one and mixed them up. Wouldn't be the first time.

Haha what a mistake...guess we will know in a month or two if it's the band they intended to book

They won't say it anyway I think lol....

But yes I'm quite sure that it's the american, all the festival (including Wacken) copy other fests to book bands!

If you wanna see the US Pentagram, just come at Hellfest, they will be there, I can confirm it hehe

No t'NOT the American it's the CHilean they (Wacken organisation) even says so in their official statement.
It isn't too weird because Chilean Pentagram are touring Europe (mostly in germany) and are supported for doing so by the German label Doomdealer/Church Within.

Not too sure though... because the CHilean Pentagram though never having released a full-length has a HUGE cult following. So it wouldn't surprise me they wanted this one. And knowing Wacken they won't want Doom they want power and crappy black/death (which imo Chilean Pentagram plays)

You're absolutely right I think the Wacken organisation lost a lot of money during the financial crises or something... the last 15 bands they announced are bands that are happy to even be at Wacken and I don't think they are being paid to perform... They should think of it as free advertisement... Something went wrong this year I guess

Ooooh, an AC DC tribute band, pretty juicy.

also, i've been listening to some UFO stuff lately, pretty good too.

yeah maybe the financial crisis is the thing, but i don't think AC DC could have been brought to perform as they charge a ton of cash(1 million $ or so i've heard) and it meant that a good few bands wouldn't get to perform.

Actually it's exactly those bands that make this year's lineup special. Bands like Bon Scott, 5th Avenue, The Waltons, Bai Bang or UK Subs have already played at Wacken 15 or even 20 years ago. It's not just a "Hey, that band was in Top 40, let's book them!" anymore, but more of a "Hey, that band played at our festival 20 years ago, let's invite them to our birthday party!" For the festival tourists who have flooded Wacken over the past few years this is pretty lame I guess, but for the true fans of the festival this is a nice treat to see the bands again which have played there back in the day.

Don't get me wrong, I completely understand the fact that you invite the bands that made Wacken what it is today, it's like inviting your oldest mates to your bday party. The only thing I don't understand is what the organisation is doing with all the money... the smaller bands and especially the old mates won't ask for HUGE amounts of money and what happens with the rest of it ? They announced about the same amount of "big" bands as 2005, where (if I remember correctly) were "only" about 50'000 people which means they had less money. So for the 20 years of Wacken there should be more bands, more stages, more party and more noise, the budget should be smashed to get the fans the best of the best in every metal category and that's what I miss... They aren't giving it there all in my humble opinion.

imo i think they still have some trick up their sleeve, like booking Rammstein or Megadeth at the last minute or something, or maybe this year there will be free beer i don't know i'm still expecting a good surprise(even though the festival looks really kickass from my point of view so far, i feel sorry for all the people who have seen all these bands before and expected something new)

Blind Guardian would be a real great option, they're one of the best live bands there is and they're doing lots of festivals this year. also there's many good/popular bands that are doing festivals this summer and don't have anything scheduled when Wacken will be happening: Nightwish, WASP, Opeth, Sepultura, The 69 Eyes(i'd totally cream my pants if they get confirmed), Tim Owens, Evile, Candlemass, Arch Enemy, Sodom, Grave Digger, Overkill, the list is huge

Haven't heard any of their music, but all I know is that it's the band of Stephan Weidner, who used to be the leader of the Böhse Onkelz.

Der W is confirmed.

Der what? Never heard of it. what the hell are they? what do they play?

Haven't heard any of their music, but all I know is that it's the band of Stephan Weidner, who used to be the leader of the Böhse Onkelz.

Yep that's the one. And it's no surprise that he's there, seens as how much his "album" was advertised last year. Another one that doesn't ticke me at all

Der W is another part of Wacken's history. He's really famous in Germany as a solo artist and as the singer of "Böhse Onkelz", which is another band that helped Wacken get so big. Not really something for the English speaking, but a nice confirmation for the Germans

Well the early Böhse Onkelz were kind of a right-wing band with some racist lyrics, but the last 2 albums weren't that bad I guess were more like party stuff though, easy to sing with...

Hurray for Heaven Shall Burn btw

Why do they keep adding only German bands?(and bands that aren't that well-known outside Germany), what about Accept who just came back from the dead?

also the line-up is missing one huge name, too bad it's way too late to bring one of the big bands to the fold.
