I know there are more of us here than Marcel and I... (I'm looking at you Lord Regnier and BitterCOld)

I figured we could use a thread of our own to discuss those things that are a concern to us aging metalheads, like actually buying albums and reminiscing about the scenes we grew up on and other things of little interest to all these young whippersnappers that are overrunning this place.

So...how many of us can still pull off the long hair without a hat? I know I'm out.

Hi, thanks for your post. I like all metal but y prefer Heavy, Thrash and Death Metal, I listen a lot of underground metal from everywhere, most of Southamerica, and my fav bands are: Pink Floyd the best ever, Megadeth, the old Metallica, (black album the last), Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Queensrÿche, Therion, Hypocrisy, Dismember, Grave, Amon Amarth, Unleashed, Arch Enemy, Vader, Immortal, ufff ... hahaha, too many bands in too many years, including 60's, 70's, 80's 90's, etc.

Here's to you man And god willing I hope to be banging me head till they stick me in a box 6 feet under!

First growl vocals?.... "mmmm let's hear it! Wow, it sounds great! let's go for more death metal!!!" That was my experience, I like going for new sounds but only if those new sounds seems to be true metal, for me (I don't like Nu metal or metalcore, even industrial). I hope I answered your question, cheers from La Paz

thrash was cool but took a back seat at first. buddy played Anthrax's "I'm the Man" and another friend loaned me "Peace Sells" back in 86, liked them, but was not entirely my thing. yet. was still mostly in to god knows what until a cute blonde haired girl in a class introduced me to alternative like Cure, Depeche Mode, etc. Also had a mix tape a friend gave her with Suicidal Tendencies' "Institutionalized" on it - I had seen the video around '84/'85, loved it, so borrowed the punk mix for that song... and started listening to some punk as well.

i was stationed in Florida in '90-'91 so while i wasn't there for the "birth" of death, i was there a couple years before the label buy in.

remember seeing a band, fuck knows who they were, at a BYOB hole in the wall club called the Nite Owl. buddy and i went there with a couple WM's (woman marines, as in USMC) expecting some glam, some Motorhead, and maybe enough thrash to make me happy. instead full on DM. thought it was holyfuck awesome. i'd love to know who we saw... judging by time and location, i imagine it was probably a pretty cool fucking band that i "discovered" a year or so later.

first purchase was a Napalm Death "Harmony Corruption" promo tape at the base exchange for $2.99. didn't have the proper cover, just some red construction paper with the label logo, band logo and songs xeroxed on. still remains one of my favorite DM releases ever because the combination of drums seeming to be central with the guitars a hurricane of riffing off to either side.

got bumped to Guam shortly thereafter, where the Air Force Base, for whatever reason, carried mostly pop/contemporary music, some rap, some whatever the fuck you called Charlatans UK and the post-Cure Disintegration/Smiths/New Order wave of Brit alternative music... and everything Earache put out. Bolt Thrower, Vader, Napalm... except Godflesh. they intrigued me so much had a friend buy me their first couple disks from Wax Trax Denver while on leave.

i just think for me it was awesome, because the whole Kerry King journey of 'this isn't angry enough! this isn't angry enough' (see Get Thrashed), was condensed into essentially 18-24 months. loved aggressive hard core punk rock like Exploited, Minor Threat, Suicidal Tendencies. GBH, which were already closing on metal, and quickly (re)-discovered Thrash, then Death... because i discovered death so soon after getting in to thrash, and it was happening around me, i skipped over most non-big thrash bands at the time. i had he big 4, AZ's Sacred Reich, but little else because death was just faster, more extreme.

skipped Black Metal entirely for the most part until shortly after visiting the site. I used to read Metal Maniacs back in the days when Katherine Ludwig was Editor. Black metal bands started making appearance around '93, and I just remember how fucking ridiculous they looked. just could not take them seriously. still don't like the cheesy imagery of it now...

girls in metal? meh. no big deal to me. Jo was in Bolt Thrower, they were awesome. hooray. i still remember a buddy reacting when I brought home a copy of "War Master" to the barracks one day..

"what'd you get?

... hand over package...

in his hilarious Tennessee accent... "Fucking Bolt thrower/?!?!?! Warmaster?!?!?" and laughing while looking at me like I was mad. cool dude, loved Zappa, Rollins, old hard core punk. Just not into the metal thing, let alone metal to that extreme.

They' still have a young blood and lots of potential to do the work. Even I've seen a guys above 60 moshing up in pits and coming out of broken noses, heads and etc etc...hats off to them. but 35 + aint old enough....Hoo!

No problem with that. I don't like it and I try to avoid it.
The most concerts that I go to, don't have deathcore bands and when they play on a big festival like Graspop I've got other bands to see. I can't get over the triggered stuff, breakdowns and polished sound. The shirts and the dancing are making me sick. I heard the latest Carnifex and it was kind of ok though. But like I said, I don't have a problem with deathcore beeing around.

It was strictly invented by the evil deathcore scene kid society.

Seriously, wouldn't band t-shirts and moshing in general make you sick?

If you put it that way, my comment doesn't sound tolerant towards deathcore.

But no, band t-shirts and moshing don't make me sick in general.

I like band t- shirts, I have a lot of band t-shirts and I use metal t-shirts in saturdays and sundays (out of work) and when I go to a metal concert. I don't do mosh, I think I'm a little fragile now, hahaha

Maaan! That's what my dad used to do it. He use to take me to Sabbath's gigs and tell me " Hey look at them....are they fucking good?" and probably..he tried many times to horrendously participate in Mosh-pits but unfortunately ended it up tearing his clothes and little bit scratches on his arms(ofcourse...bleeding!). Until, one day my mom (literally!) kicked out asses and thrown us out of the house and we just doling around the streets to wait for the sun to come out. Woo! those were the golden days. I hope you guys have a great time out there in gigs like that.

In summer 2010 (she was 15) I took her to see Rosetta, It was very small and personable, at some dive bar a couple of states away. The people there were really cool. We were right in front of the "stage". Mike, the lead singer, gave her earplugs; That's how loud it was! We will see how it goes at an event with 15,000 crazy lunatics!
