Getting Into: Manowar

The articles in this series begun by our own Baz Anderson are designed to give a brief overview of a band's entire discography, so as to provide a clear point of entry for the uninitiated. It offers a different approach from the typical review format, for the curious newcomer to a well-traveled band.

Manowar
Heavy/power metal
USA

Manowar helped kick off the American power metal scene back in the '80s with their self-referential bombast and overdriven melodic metal. While their fame stems as much from their seemingly-blissful goofiness (andů 'memorable' artwork) as from their music, if not more so, their catalogue holds the resources to back up the years of shameless chest-pounding.

Bands
Skumring

Skumring was created in the early summer months of 2004, when Cecilie and Vàli were discussing to form a band.Already in the planning stages it became clear that the music we wanted to make would have to be heavy and melodic, thus the choise fell on doom metal.

We immediatly recruited Ole to play rhythm guitar, and KK joined later to handle the bass duties. We quickly started to rehearse self composed material, and after a few weeks without a drummer, Knut replied to our ad on the internet and the line-up was complete.

Bands
Devil

One day as late as in 2009, the worlds youngest old band was formed. Over a few beers, comrades and festival promoters of Metal Merchants Festival Ronny Østli and Stian Fossum decided to contribute to the heavy metal scene after watching a tremendous Pentagram concert. This was the very birth of what should be known as DEVIL. The gathering of the apocalyptic raiders started by recruiting Ronny's Vesen bandmate Thomas Ljosåk on bass guitar and Stian's Rikets Crust bandmate Kai Wanderås on guitar. Missing only a singer, they decided to ask long time friend and fellow metal head Joakim Trangsrud, who practically was both lured and forced to join the first rehearsal. DEVIL was ready to roll.

Bands
Faustcoven

"Faustcoven is a one man project that tries to capture some of the magic of the Old School Black Metal of the great bands Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Tormentor and Darkthrone. Combine this with old and doomy metal like Black Sabbath, Pentagram and Candlemass, and you have a rough idea of what I try to achieve. Ugly and sometimes catchy riffs in a rocking way!"

Downfall Of Nur - Umbras de Barbagia

Few since early Agalloch have written such a stunning soundtrack to your contemplation of the meaning of life, nature, and darkness. Atmospheric, folk-oriented black metal like this can be simultaneously beautiful and ominous. There are things on this earth that are very, very old.

Beware, this music will lead you directly to a life of solitude in the forest, living the bare and contented life of the hermit, brought to dwell on the mountainside. While the folk music is not outwardly dominant, the massive and crushing mood will have you feel the cool air on your cheeks and the icy stream running between your fingers as easily as if you were already outside, far from anyone but the tall trees.
