There's no denying. The underground has been taken by storm. Bölzer has so far released material that barely scratches an hour in total, yet they have been recognized by almost everyone as a force to be reckoned with. How are they able to create so much with so little?

Harakiri For The Sky - Aokigahara

A relatively new metal movement has taken me aback, leading me down an exhilarating, spiral path of emotionally charged and blissfully saturated musical sensibility. The blackgaze concept is a combination of black metal axioms with more dreamy and mellow textures and Harakiri For The Sky, a two-piece outfit from Vienna, Austria, have nailed it.

The usual characteristics of blackgaze/shoegaze/post-black (yes I lump them together as one, because to me, there really aren't many different musical traits that separate the three) are well represented in Aokigahara. Tremolo-picked riffs create an ethereal wall of sound, rapid blastbeats and shrieking vocals interchange with slower sections - often without warning - and the air of melancholy floats through the entire entity. The songs are very meaningful, and I found myself bobbing my head up and down in agreement with the comprehensive movement and motion of the themes.

Amaranthe - American Beauty Car Show, Haapsalu Episcopal Castle, Haapsalu, Estonia, 19.07.2014

Haapsalu is a small and beautiful Estonian resort town by the sea. Each July its quiet is disturbed by an invasion of owners and admirers of the American car industry. Shining cars, roaring engines, burning rubber, cruising, and a drag race on the airfield strip - American Beauty Car Show has got it all. If you're into all that, it's the place to be. Naturally, this also calls for musical entertainment of varied sorts, which somehow managed to grab my attention for the first time with only one name - Amaranthe. Just because I happen to like them.

Interviews
Amaranthe

In person at the restaurant of spa hotel Laine, before the gig at American Beaty Car Show in Haapsalu, Estonia, 19.07.2014.

I get to the spa hotel by getting very, very vague directions from the local band-manager. Surprising even myself, I end up at the right place with barely a wrong turn. Even before I can say hello I had already gotten two comments on my Freak Kitchen t-shirt, showing that the band know their fellow home-town musicians. It takes a bit of time while I grab some water, the band takes a picture with the hotel staff, and so on. We start our interview with Olof and Jake, as Elize gets her dessert which in its apparent goodness keeps her occupied and listening for the first part of the interview. A short while later Henrik joins us, mostly listening.

Entombed A.D. - Back To The Front

Now we have two Entombeds lurking around? Details on this fiasco are vague, but the most obvious scenario is that these guys were ready to do battle metal style...Which is less Braveheart meets Conan The Barbarian, and more of Judge Judy...But Judge Judy on a metal musicians budget for legal representation, which is probably something like Barry Zuckerkorn meets Lionel Hutz. Alas, Alex Hellid packed up his toys and went home, leaving the rest of the Entombed crew to release this as Entombed A.D.. Bad news for Hellid, because Back To The Front slays pretty damn hard.
