With the passing of David Gold, and the demise of Woods Of Ypres, we are left with only David's previous work. Today I've decided to review Woods III, which is the equivalent to the little brother in the family that everybody ignores.

That being said, this album is far from the gem of the bunch. This is due to several reasons. The biggest reason is the off-production, it's not lo-fi and "underground", and it's not pristine and streamlined. It's stuck somewhere in the middle; things are mixed wrong, and there are little audio bumps. Another thing that brought this album down was the repetitive nature of the music. Most of the songs follow the same structure, and feature similar melodies: intro, tremolo, clean chorus, tremolo, outro.

I love Woods' entire discography, but this one is the only one that (as a whole) hasn't totally blown me away
I read somewhere that this was thought the last album of the band, and that what songs were left were put into the album, my memory might be a bit flaky but I think that's what I read. That would explain how I cannot enjoy all the songs the same amount as I usually do with the rest of the discography.

I find that the production on this album is spotty, which is kind of a minus.

I still love this album to bits though.

not like its my concern but dude why rate 9 and in your review 7.5? I'm not even reading the review.
On the album, its the only woods album am yet to spin. I have only listened to distractions of living alone and as always the lyrics and vocals rule, but the instruments just average. Good thing the vocals are very fore front

To be honest if probably give it a 5 now. It's just not a good album. There's four tracks that are worthwhile here. The rest are just bleh.

9 dropped to 5? that's a bit extreme.

this is one of the first albums that introduced me to black metal, so I always have a soft spot for it (=

It's got some decent black metal with some melodic touch going for it, but the quality of the tracks are just too uneven, and we're left with tracks that are inferior to others, to the point where they feel like fillers.
