Impetuous Ritual are neither re-inventing death metal nor their own cavernous style. But they don’t need to when the result is this hellish.

Not sure if my taste has changed, or this album really is sub-par for IR's standanrds.

Nah, IR has always been a pretty subpar band.

Eh, compared to their fellow contemporaries in the cavernous death metal genre like Abyssal, Ævangelist (first album at least), Antediluvian, Mitochondrion, Portal, etc., they're pretty unspectacular.

This is insanely heavy, probably the heaviest thing I've listened to this year, in fact. I'm not too sure about the production though, it feels extremely dense.
