Death/Thrash
Jul 19, 2023
This version of Morbid Visions (and of Bestial Devastation for that matter) respects the raw energy and relentless brutality of the original take, but it is also an improvement in every possible way; the guitar tone is fantastic, and the guitars are actually in tune now, the vocal mix is excellent, and every riff is clearly heard in a way that one can now finally fully appreciate how high the death/thrash bar was set back in the mid-80s by these Brazilians. The Cavalera brothers took the material of their teenage years and re-recorded it in the present as mature and accomplished musicians, but without compromising its authentic ferocity one bit. With the help of producer Arthur Rizk, they crafted this so successfully that it resets the bar even higher today. And Eliran Cantor’s stunning artwork perfectly reflects how badass this album is.

This might actually turn out to be very interesting, since lately they've been able to put out quality stuff. Just leave Beneath the Remains and Arise alone, they're already as perfect as they could ever be.

I remember when I first heard Sepultura's own re-recording of Troops of Doom I was blown away and realized that I underestimated their first two releases. I was hoping for more re-recordings ever since. It sure took a long time, but hey, better late than never.

Of course this recording have a better sound and all. But the old one have a unique savagery who made Sepultura one of the greatest bands of all time 🤘.

Their early death thrashy stuff is kinda meh, and if I'm being honest: this monkey never thought highly of BtR or Arise either.

Now Chaos A.D. and Roots, those are my jam.

Buuuuuuttt, I'm always willing to give re-recordings a try if they provide enough improvement, and that's what this album looks like it's accomplishing.

Fool, you humans merely borrowed the concept of throwing your feces. We have perfected it. Your human excrement have no power here.

These rerecordings are heaps better than the original albums. This is the ferocity and savagery I wanted to hear the first time, instead of the poorly produced sloppiness they actually were.

Here’s to hoping they re-record Schizophrenia.

His vocals are sounding really strong on this album too. I'm kind of surprised by that, as his voice has changed a lot over the years, and mostly not in a good way.

I've never seen Cavalera Conspiracy live and never saw Sepultura live with Max, so I hope they tour again soon

Enormous improvement. This makes the original sound "goofy ahh", to put it very technically. Not to bash the original too much, I mean a 1986 debut death/thrash metal from Brazil is going to sound the way it does. And the original will always be a nice time capsule of a different time and circumstance. That being said, I'll preferably listen to these "covers".

Too much praise for a re-recording?... Well it has to be good with all those technologies developed in the last 3 decades, right?. But I really hope the new kids like it the way we admired it in the 90s. I still remember seeing the brothers live in 00's and it was nostalgic listening to those tracks again.

I'm not really sure what your point is.

I've been listening to Sepultura for almost my entire adult life. I saw them for the first time at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1991 and this album sounds truly amazing.

I've never listened to Morbid Visions. I figured I would try this version first, and then do the Sepultura Original (which I still haven't listened to yet).

Some of these songs sound massive. I can see the primitive style everyone always talks about, especially in the drumming. I think the production is a bit much, but that's more a personal complaint, most modern production IMO is overdone.

Cool release and I'm sure these guys had fun doing it.

Same here, didn't listen to Morbid Visions of Sepultura but absolutely love how ominous this sounds. It's almost I am listening to a thrash album in a death metal format.

I still like the OG a tad better, it has that 1st wave BM feel to it. However, both this and the OG are outstanding. I also happen to like both a lot more than "the average joe" it seems
