Throw everything you think this sounds like out the window. Following the excellent Elements of Persuasion, Dream Theater's singer James LaBrie teamed up once more with Matt Guillory to record one of this year's best albums for sure.

The musical base remains the same along with Italian prodigy Marco Sfogli handling the guitar duties with brio. However, Static Impulse takes a new direction with the rhythm section. Sweden's Peter Wildoer [of Darkane fame] brings his mathematical drumming knowledge to the table as well as a huge dose of screams and a rejuvenating Death Metal inspired undercoating. But don't be afraid, as with its predecessor, the songs on this album are heavy and catchy as hell. There is actually an elusive dichotomy in the sound, maybe between the radio-friendly choruses and the overall extremely heavy and aggressive bridges. It is hard to figure out what the hell is going on, while being swept away by the songs at the same time. And this pretty much resumes why this album should make your shortlist.

James LaBrie is hands down one of Metal's greatest voices and after five years returns with his newest solo album. When most people think of LaBrie doing a solo album the first thought is a bunch of ballads. But not on this record. A brilliant blend of Gothenburg and Prog, Static Impulse is a hard hitting, kick-ass record that is sure to turn heads and shows Dream Theater's vocalist in a whole new light!

This may end being better than a lot of recent melodeath releases.

A-WE-SO-ME. It's like ten times better than some melodeath releases of this year. It's powerfull, technical, melodic and surprising. Mixing Labrie's melodic voice with Peter Wildoer's grunt provides an explosive result. All musicians are great, specially Marco Sfogli, Wildoer and Guillory. If you want to follow my advise: get it as soon as you can!!!

Can't say I'm the biggest DT fan. But I dig James LaBrie solo albums so much.
This album is quite amusing and surprising in many ways. And a killer band, BTW. 2 thumbs up.

The best LaBrie has ever done. Euphoric is my favorite, but the sogns are all excellent. The drumming is awsome, the melodies settle in the head and don't let go. The keyboard are hunting...and LaBrie's voice...well, perfect would be an euphemism.

I really hated this album. The worst music I've heard in a long time. So boring. I've never been a fan of LaBrie's voice, but it has almost nothing to do with why I don't like this album. It's just that it sounds totally commercial and and actually pop. Really, to me, this is not metal, and those superfast solos don't change anything. And besides, as Dangerboner said, the songs do sound the same. boo.

I am very surprised by this album, finally picked it up and have to say his voice sounds great. The melodies are memorable and I think I will enjoy this one... although sometimes it reminds me of Soilwork.

That's a bit extreme imo as I quite enjoyed it, but I do agree that quite a lot of songs are rather samey, which is why I didn't rate it higher

Well, if I rate something with an 8, it means I enjoyed it very much; I don't what your criteria are. I don't think I will listen to Static Impulse any time soon.

Yes, I enjoyed it very much too, despite the shortcomings of the album. It's something that I would revisit even after this year. Each to their own (=

A little overrated. I revisited it recently and again didn't like it that much. Some songs did grow on me however, overall, there is not even 1 track that standouts that much.
