Great album but I think they got a little too drony on this. More structured songs like those of their debut will suit them better.

I disagree... To me they are at their best when they let go, specially on Things Viral, easily their best album.

Beside the fact that I simply prefer their debut, that album has personal importance for me. I really enjoyed it when I was not even into ordinary and non-extreme sludge metal. Also, I think that their debut was more unique, at least for me since I haven't heard many bands doing that sort of extreme sludge doom.
These does not matter after all, we both agree that this album is incredible.

No questions about quality as I love all their stuff but I would definitely debate the debut's uniqueness considering bands like Burning Witch (minus the massive feedback). I guess I prefer Things Viral more because it's more subtle than their debut which was a far more direct album. So I ended up discovering more things after each listen with Things Viral... But yeah, a certain personal factor comes in, discovered these guys back when I was 15 or so, when I started to get into the more fucked up corner of metal.

Note aside: I'm just talking about uniqueness within their discography, outside of that... I think they were always an unique band and franquily, it's my favorite Stephen O'Malley band.

burning which and moss are the only bands I could remember that are similar to their debut at the moment. Also, I said that their debut is more unique for me. You might be right that it's not that unique.
Also, it's my favorite Stephen O'Malley up to now, too.

I remember my "what the fuck is this???!" thoughts after I bought this at the local cd store (along with some Isengard) millenia ago.

I listened to it until I liked it. Not a slow grower, but a grower, nonetheless, especially if you've never been exposed to doom this extreme and sparse before.

There truly are no other bands like Khanate. Fucked-up, brooding, creepy, crushing, suffocating...

What I came to say, though, is that the Low EP "songs for a dead pilot" reminds me a lot of khanate without the heaviness and the vocals in parts. It reminds me of the ambient parts of khanate. Good stuff.
