After the huge success of Edguy's leader with his side-project Avantasia, some Edguy fans feared that Edguy would suffer from the popularity of Avantasia or even that Edguy would just stop existing, at least for a while. But, for God's sake, Tobias Sammet is a very productive writer and with a stable line-up, Edguy released "Mandrake" in 2001. Successor of "Theater Of Salvation" [seeing that "The Savage Poetry" is a new version of early years' songs], this album has been awaited by fans since 1999 and it was carrying a lot of hopes. I was not planning to listen utr, just came home from work and blindy put it on. I was blwo away , even better as savage poetry, catchy old school power metal whit great lyrics, vocal lines and melodies.

This album is very good, better than I expected for sure, "The Pharaoh" and "Tears Of A Mandrake" are the best songs on here, but "Jerusalem", "Golden Dawn", and "All The Clowns" are also very good. It's a very memorable album indeed, with very catchy riffs and choruses. A real classic German power metal album, up there with the best imo.

The first seven songs are all top european power metal tunes. The three last ones are a bit underwhelming. Worth getting the version with the bonus tracks as both are pretty good.

A perfectly enjoyable power metal album. I would have loved this had I found about it back when it was new. At this day and age I have heard about million similar power metal albums already, so Mandrake doesn't have much to offer, for me at least. If I remember correctly, the reason I didn't pick up this even though I knew the band was the jester image that I found stupid, but turns out I was the fool all along.

A fantastic power metal album, in my top 20 for the genre. The first half is definitely stronger than the second though. 8.8/10 for me - 'Tears of a Mandrake' and 'Golden Dawn' are the standout tracks. 'Jerusalem' and 'All the Clowns' are both also fantastic.

How is this album not in the list of 200 best metal albums of all time? Not even on power metal list or best of 2001?... This album is a MASTERPIECE! Pure metal, geniune, energetic, fantastic.
