Merrill started to play guitar at age ten growing up in Norwood, MA but later switched to bass. He has played in a country, blues, reggae, prog, and '50's/'60's cover band. Before joining Godsmack, Merrill was a self-employed carpenter (a trade he shared with Godsmack lead guitarist Tony Rombola). Merrill is married and has one child. He currently lives in Auburn, New Hampshire.
