Catharist first got together in St Andrews, Scotland in 2005 under the then name "questioned by theory". Shedding old afflictions with a previous incarnation of the band, the name was subsequently changed to "Catharist" in late 2006.
The members had played together in various other local bands over the years and decided to form a new band which would showcase all their interests, not just musically but through the lyrics as well.
In 2008, after relentlessly gigging for two years and releasing there first recording "Burned and Butchered", the band reluctantly went on hiatus due to unforeseen circumstances.
Some members went on to play in various other bands, but In 2011 they decided it was time to re-form Catharist as they did not like the way things ended so abruptly.
Since then they have released their debut album "When Ancient Gods Return", and the remixed follow up "Ancestral : Origins : Celestial"

They are Currently writing new material and will release a new record in 2015.
