Iron Maiden - Win Grammy Award

Last night, Iron Maiden were honored with a Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance".

The band was nominated for the track "El Dorado", from the band's latest album The Final Frontier. The ceremony of the 53rd annual Grammy Awards was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Iron Maiden were not there to accept the Award as they just kicked off their Final Frontier World Tour.

This marks the first Grammy win for Iron Maiden. The band was previously nominated for "Fear of the Dark" (at the 1994 Grammys) and "The Wicker Man" (at the 2001 Grammys).

Other nominees in this year's "Metal" category were as follows:

  • Iron Maiden - "El Dorado" (from The Final Frontier)
  • Korn - "Let The Guilt Go" (from Korn III: Remember Who You Are)
  • Lamb Of God - "In Your Words" (from Wrath)
  • Megadeth - "Sudden Death" (from Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock)
  • Slayer - "World Painted Blood" (from World Painted Blood)

Them Crooked Vultures - the rock supergroup featuring Josh Homme, John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl - picked up a Grammy Award in the "Best Hard Rock Performance" for the track "New Fang".

Hm...a bit strange they have won with song that is actually a huge letdown for so many (maybe most) metalheads...

This definitively proves that the Grammy awards are a complete farce and are awarded solely on popularity basis without any kind of real consideration for the quality of the music. if they would have actually chosen the best track, World Painted Blood would have surely won out of that list, not that it's actually that a good song though.

El Dorado is not the best song of Maiden, definitely The Wicker Man should have won in 2001. But still it's easily the best song off of that list. Cheers Maiden! /,,/

This is seriously bullshit! Ok, the song wasn't that bad but there is SOOOO many other metalbands that deserves that prize more than Maiden...

I'm happy for Maiden, actually...metal is slowly starting to get some recognition in the "mainstream" circles, which could lead to a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how this goes...

It's funny, Sudden Death wasn't that good a song, but just because it's from a major band it gets nominated. Grammys are totally worthless.

Shows that the Grammys did no research at all.

Picked out the bands they had heard of and looked no further.

This sums up what the outside world thinks of metal.

Well, Mastodon did get a nomination once! Never in a million years did I think that Mastodon would be nominated in a Grammys, never! That was cool...

Ah man, I was expecting this but I think Lamb of God's "In Your Words" was the best out of the nominees.

This year seems that it doesn't matter how full of shit the album is. They have only checked the record sales.

Such shitty nominees. Such a bad music industry, such a letdown. I truly believe that the really good metal bands are above such shitty awards like the Grammies although grabbed one but that's ok...

Mastodon had, like all the nominees this year, a contract with a major label

You guys don't actually expect the Grammys to be interested in the heavy metal underground, do you?

It's a mainstream event, so they went only by names and sales. It's always like that. It's managed by people who don't know shit about metal.

I'm not (and never was) really concerned about the Grammys by any stretch of the imagination, but Mastodon's nomination was still a pleasant shock because they've not yet achieved the "household name", you know what I mean?

this was obvious over 20 years ago when Jethro Tull beat Metallica for best hard rock/metal album back in '89. if it weren't on MS, i would have paid the entire waste of air industry circle jerk absolutely zero attention.

Kid's Choice Awards is less predictable and more interesting than the Grammys these days.
Seriously, Metal should just drop off the map and make it's own ceremony. That'd be more worth watching.

A lot of people class Slayer as sellouts for "Diabolus In Musica" and "God Hates Us All". "Sellout" is a term too frequently used, and mostly, wrongly used as well.

Heh, funny because Slayer has been accused of "selling out" with their albums like God Hates Us All and Diabolus in Musica because of the nu-metal influence.

But I don't really take the term "sell outs" seriously anymore. It's an insult that gets thrown around so damn much it's lost all meaning.

You can add the terms "gay", "emo", "pop" (for fks sake!) "overrated", "fanboy" and "hater" into that category as well.
