Dream Theater - Keyboardist Jordan Rudess Up For Grammy Nominations

In the beginning of 2014, the talented keyboardist of Dream Theater, Jordan Rudess, released two new solo albums: the successfully crowdfunded Explorations, recorded with the Sinfonietta Consonus symphonic orchestra, and All That Is Now which is generally a "piano album" (initially released in December 2013). And what's really surprising is the fact that both of them are up for consideration for Grammy nominations.

Categories:
  • Explorations for Keyboard & Orchestra: Best Contemporary Classical Composition, Best Classical Instrumental Solo, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Classical Compendium, Best Instrumental Composition.
  • All That Is Now: Best New Age Album.

Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree called Explorations the most successful fusion of rock and classical sensibilities he has ever heard, while the ex-member of Yes and film composer Trevor Rabin praised the integration of the synthesizer, which, based on his opinion, sounds like it should be a voice in the traditional orchestra.

Jordan Rudess is an incredibly creative and imaginative musician, and perhaps one of the most innovative musicians in the big scenes right now. I just wish they'd take the risk to show it more on Dream Theater albums.

But yeah, good on him. They're diverse, unique and rather strong releases, and here's hoping things go well for him.
(But for fuck's sake, lose the glasses... it's really not a good look)

Sadly, I agree. I think they should "use" his talent a lot more. When he joined the band, they had a lot more sparks. Even though Petrucci says they create a lot of music together, I don't feel it. It almost seems like Jordan is just some filler there.

This is sounding really good though, his solo work.

I remember reading an interview with Rudess in regards to the Levin Minnemann Rudess collaboration. There was a question that asked him specifically about a really unique synth sound used on the song "The Blizzard" (which really gave the song such a special vibe) and whether we should ever get to see more creative/unique synthwork from him with a DT album.

He responded to this by basically saying: "While that would be nice, the band all feel that we really have our own sound going, and the fanbase has come to expect this sound of us. So I don't think it's likely to see something like this on a DT release."

This kind of logic really made me see the problem with DT lately. They're too determined to impress their fans, who honestly have no idea what they want when they ask for "another I&W or SFAM". I still feel that Jordan maintains some of the most creative parts to make it into Dream Theater's works. For example, I'm mostly sure that the orchestral section of Illumination Theory from DT12 (the only part of that entire album that actually genuinely surprised me in a positive way) had Jordan written all over it.

Absolutely remarkable. As someone that has performed concerti and spent a lot of time in the classical scene all his work is of the highest level. He brings it to every genre, every arrangement, every ensemble. A truly unique and incredible talent as both a player and composer. This is one of the worlds best unchained and doing his own thing and it's simply divine. Enjoy.
