Ritchie Blackmore - In Legal Battle Over Deep Purple Royalties

The Daily Mail is reporting that former Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore has sued two management companies, HEC Enterprises and Deep Purple (Overseas), claiming that he got underpaid in recent years for co-writing such songs as "Smoke On The Water", "Black Night" and "Highway Star" and that he is owed £750,000.

The two management companies have been sued before by the other Deep Purple members of the Mark II line-up and an agreement about the royalties has been reached, but it did not include Ritchie Blackmore. He says he is entitled to receive one fifth of up to 85% of the income from 14 of the band's albums. And he says that an audit by a specialist accountant covering the years between 2007 and 2013 showed 'very substantial' under-accounting by both management companies.

Ritchie Blackmore joined Deep Purple in 1968 but left in 1975 to form his own band, Rainbow, following personality clashes with other band members. Blackmore left Deep Purple for good in 1993 after a second stint with the group. Later, he also formed Blackmore's Night with Candice Night.

If someone wants to laugh, just read the articole in question. LOL

It actually claims that Richie has not been in Deep Purple for more than 40 years (when in fact he left some 20 years ago for good). It also makes reference to a song called "Black Knight" - which is actually "Black Night". Poorly researched article...

It is his right man, I mean much of the golden era of Deep Purple happened thanks to his contribution. As for both bands sucking... Rainbow did indeed get crappier as time went by and Deep Purple copes with the time releasing material that is not that bad but not anything impressive either. As for Blackmore's Night, I pretty much like the band itself and their music, though I'm in for the folk instruments and Candice's voice.

Never said they were metal. But they do make good, catchy tunes. Seriously now, money, money, money, it is that guy's life work for godsake! He has the right to get his fair share of the earnings, after all, Blackmore is one of the main reasons why Deep Purple got popular in the first place. His guitar signatures in the Mark II era of Deep Purple remains legendary even today. In fact, it is he, Lord's keyboard signature sound and to a lesser extent, Gillan's voice that made that band so good back then. Which reminds me, it is Lord's keyboard sound that misses from today's metal scene. I always found his signature sound better fit into the metal sound than the commercial 80s keyboard sound that was later borrowed by all metal bands.

It matters less. If the other members settled out of court with a favorable verdict, then he can too. The only issue is that he had a huge contribution to the bands early material, so he might get a bigger share as opposed to the other members. It remains to be seen. What I find rather inapropriate is that he kinda woke up almost 15 years after the others members sued those companies for unpaid royalties. No matter how much of a businessman a musician is, if you see the other band members doing it, why don't you do it too?

Can't blame Blackmore for that though ) He has 2 small kids that he probably won't live to see them being adults. And a young wife to top it all. The guy probably thinks he won't live for much longer and he worries what he will leave behind.

Actually a think the last Deep Purple albums are fantastic (Bananas the most). Of course the classic are legendary, but we cannot say the later Purple material is CRAP.
