Tomas Lindberg, the iconic frontman of Swedish metal band At The Gates, has died at the age of 52 after a battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer affecting the mouth and palate. The news of Lindberg’s passing was shared by longtime friend and fellow musician David Isberg (known for his work as vocalist with Bloodofjupiter, and formerly with Opeth).

Lindberg was a key figure in shaping the melodic death metal genre, often referred to as the "Gothenburg sound" in reference to the band’s hometown. With At The Gates, he helped lay the groundwork for an entire movement in heavy music, influencing countless bands across the globe with the group’s groundbreaking albums, including Slaughter Of The Soul.

Tomas Lindberg also handled vocal duties in several other bands throughout his career, including Disfear, The Great Deceiver, Lock Up, The Lurking Fear, Skitsystem, and Nightrage.

In August 2025, it was revealed on At The Gates' Facebook and Instagram pages that Lindberg had been treated for adenoid cystic carcinoma (a form on cancer in the mouth and pallet), which was diagnosed in December 2023. This resulted in him having a big part of the roof of his mouth removed, followed by radiation therapy, and ongoing problems with finding some of the cancer remaining. This was revealed as the reason for the band's continued silence on activity and new album progress.

In that post, Lindberg commented on the new album as follows: "Luckily, we recorded vocals for the demos for the new album before all of this happened. The last version of the vocals, the ones that will end up on the album, were recorded in ONE day, mostly one takes, the DAY before the surgery, just to make sure we HAD the album, so to speak. So the vocals were actually recorded BEFORE the rest of the album... a bit different, but it felt good to have it done.

We have now decided to not wait any longer to release this new album. We had first planned to wait with the release until we knew if/when I would be able to sing again, and we were able to support the release with shows. Now when everything about the future is a bit more unsure it feels good to deliver this album. It is an album that we all are very proud of, and it's the first time in 10 years that Jonas and I have worked together with Anders writing an albums’ worth of music. It is a bit more of a return to the "roots", probably best described as a mix between the two last albums we did with Anders (Slaughter Of The Soul and At War With Reality). Hope you all will enjoy it!"

This hits me hard. He was one of my childhood heroes, able to portray raw emotion in his vocals that was unmatched and still largely is.

His style was so distinct, you knew it was him wherever he popped up - Disfear, Nightrage, etc.

My top Tompa performances would be something like:

1. ATG - Terminal Spirit Disease
2. Disfear - Live The Storm
3. Nightrage - Sweet Vengeance.

Eve the "GO!" in Slaughter of the Soul is timeless.

RIP to a true legend.

A sad day. At The Gates inspired so many people to start making music (myself included), and his voice was a major part of their sound.

He will be missed but live forever through the incredible music he gave us.

Damn dude. Hugely influential for a lot of the modern metalcore and hardcore bands I love. Will certainly be spinning some ATG today.

At The Gates was one of my first death metal bands. In my first year of college, I went to a music store that had a big collection of used stuff and they had a battered copy of Gardens Of Grief on CD. I was with a Swedish friend who saw me looking at it and said, "Oh, that's a classic, you should definitely get that." I decided not to heed his advice, since I already had an armful of stuff and it was a bit pricey for a used EP, but that prompted me to check out At The Gates. Next time I went back to that store I bought myself a used copy of Slaughter Of The Soul, and then I quickly fished out the rest of their early albums so that by the time they announced At War With Reality I was firmly a fan. I could listen to any album of theirs and feel like I'm listening to some of the best that death metal has to offer. Slaughter Of The Soul and With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness are two of my favorites in the genre and overall.

Tompa had a killer voice: ragged, almost a screech, but strong, and very cold, instantly recognizable. It was a very hardcore way of singing death metal, which is why he also worked so well in Disfear and Skitsystem and the like. There was so much emotion in it; he could communicate pain and intensity and changes in mood you can detect only rarely in that kind of vocal setting, and with so much vicious conviction behind it. Truly one of the best extreme vocalists ever. And he was a great frontman, too; I can't believe it's already been a decade since I saw At The Gates, because that show feels so fresh in my mind. He always struck me as a person I could respect, just from the way he talked and carried himself and interacted with fans, and I remember reading interviews where he talked about his work as a teacher and how important it was to him to work with kids, especially immigrant kids. I liked him.

I read this news as soon as I opened my eyes this morning. First thing I did was put on The Great Deceiver's A Venom Well Designed, and then With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness on the way to work. It's been a while since I last listened to Lock Up or The Lurking Fear; he left such a strong body of work.

Fucking hell man, what the fuck is this year... And this one is completely out of the blue... I still feel like a kid, and he was just 16 years older.

ATG was a significant part of what felt like the best time of my life, and always will be. Not to even mention how much music I've ever been listening to they'd helped to define. I'll never forget when, I think in 2008, I'd put Suicide Nation (the opening part) as my main ringtone on my Nokia N82, and how it loudly rang in my pocket on a lecture with a very strict professor, and how I scrambled to silence it, and how we were laughing our asses off. Thank you for everything. Right now, it's hard to even comprehend for how much.

And with the new album situation - what a hero, truly. Vila i frid, Tompa.

Aw fuck. Tompa was such a nice, friendly person, not to mention his awesome vocal works.
I'm drinking to you right now, Tomas Lindberg, blasting Slaughter of the Soul. Thanks for everything, horns up, and I'm so, so glad to have seen you perform on stage! My, that 2018 HF show was beyond awesome

so Rest In Peace, thanks for the music and everything, and my condolences to your friends and loved ones
