Well, a lot of band names are non-English words, references to obscure movies and books, words taken from religious jargon, and so on. Hard to understand what's going on without having read about it first. Same goes for lyrics.

Nowadays I feel like I understand quite a lot since I've been on this scene for so long, but "all of it" is very much a stretch.

You understand both metal scene n anime scene. Which scene is wider ?

I don't know if that's what you mean by "wider" scene, but I feel like the metal scene is more diverse, meaning that there are several subscenes that don't really have much in common with the others. One can understand a lot about the obscure black metal scene and not understand shit about the classics on melodic metal, for instance (totally not me)

In the anime community pretty much you're guaranteed to know the classics unless you really are out of the curve.
Most of the time people also have a lot of overlapping tastes, which is different in the metal scene, so in this sense I'd say metal feels wider.

Not sure if that's good, though. It's just how it is.
