This band is yet another project of Jünger Tumilon, formerly known as The Helvetic Underground Committee, which is a Swiss circle of many noteworthy acts, such as Arkhaaik, Dakhma, Kvelgeyst, Lykhaeon, and Ungfell. The difference that Arrows make is that it is the most creatively liberal act of the circle, since it has abandoned the conceptual character that has dominated the bands of this musical society. Mastermind Menetekel dreamt of a project with no boundaries, either musical or lyrical, and he then found Voidgaunt and Darvish to fulfill this idea of his. As a result, Yearning Arrows; Cloven Suns deals with a variety of topics, like conflict, fear, the meaning of life, and the pursuit of creative endeavours, among other subjects.
Musically, the album is also quite diverse. Ingredients of black, death, and doom metal are used, along with both harsh and clean vocals, quasi-symphonic passages, gothic and melancholic undertones, and epic, soaring melodies. The fluidity in the songwriting is remarkable, with abrasive and pummelling sections seamlessly transitioning into melancholic and reflective ones. The presence of two versatile vocalists gives the songs a sonic and expressional richness and variety, and the instrumental parts are exquisite, both when they go for the dark and the ominous and when they reach for epicness and triumph. All four songs are ambitious enough to not go under the 7-minute mark, and progressive enough, not in terms of complexity, but in structure and scope. The album can be labeled as “experimental” in the sense that it channels influences of bands like The Ruins Of Beverast, Mgła, Batushka, Bølzer, and Type O Negative in a unique and convincing way, while remaining authentic and original. The cover art by Menetekel may look disorganized and Picasso-esque (intentionally, I guess), but it is undeniably eye-catching and reflective of the music’s intent.
For this album, no promos were handed out, it has not been uploaded on any major YouTube channels or streaming platforms, and no big metal websites have been informed about it. Menetekel and Darvish have crafted these songs together, and, after years of releasing music “the right way”, they have decided to just drop it on Bandcamp with a ‘name your price’ option. While music has been turning more and more into a commodity these days, Yearning Arrows; Cloven Suns is a breath of fresh, creative, and human air. And, with all its imperfections, it is actually perfect.
“And stubborn cheer our hearts
Which loathe the fascist unity
As our cry shall sound:
‘We’re at war with peace’”
