No official Satyricon thread ?!? ok here it is !
I don't want to write a wide monologue about how i feel about the band, so i'll just give you the short version:
Satyricon: you should all know them! they've been my favourite band for quite a long time, it's hard to decide which album attracts me the most, but i'd say it's DMT. Many people don't like their later material (after Nemesis Devina), but come on Rebel Extravaganza is also a masterpiece, the main problem about this album is that it comes after their legendary 3rd album - Nemesis Devina. But i'd call RE a great example of moderen black metal that is not yet sell-out. About Vulcano - yeah, it's not that good album, but still there are some good songs to be found on it. After this album we all hoped that Satyricon would return to their roots, but they turned in totally different direction- towards mtv
So i guess that is a fatal downfall, for the Kings of Black metal

Sad ending of a story... But i have i wonderful news for my Slovenian friends! I've heared Satyricon are coming to Slovenia this autumn!! (sorce: http://www.rockthenation.at/index.php?id=37)

They never were the Kings of bm seriously.

I still enjoy dark medieval times but since this album they always released weaker stuff. Of course some people which aren't really fan of regular bm can find songs such as fuel for hatredattractive, it's more catchy and more straightforward metal. But for a bmer, satyricon died long ago.

Their new cd is decent, but I don't know why some BM bands release new records with shitty production quality. It's obviously done on purpose. I know BM originated with that type of quality, but it's come a long way. Either way, the band is good, it just feels like I'm listening to something from 88.

I agree with Ruines, Satyricon is basicly Dark Medieval Times, that album was pure genious. After that, I didn't really like one album from them. They lost the touch that made DMT brilliant.

Now, Diabolical didn't impress me at all... actualy, non of their album impressed me ...

I am so tired of bands like Satyricon, Darkthrone and Mayhem. They realeased great albums but they should have stopped instead of covering themselve with a load of bad comments while releasing shitty Black/punk shit.......... imo

Ok, let's start with IMO to make it clear.

I like their older stuff, DMT & ND, we all know it.

When I first heard Now, Diabolical I was greatly surprised, and disappointed. But it grew on me, and I kinda like it now. But, it is nowhere close, true.

I actually think "Now Diabolical" is the only bad album they had made, but it sucks so badly, that album is horrible and dreadfully simplistic. When I first listened to the song "K.I.N.G." it was like... what the fuck!?, and after I listened to the whole album I hav eeven have to recognize that it's the best song...

Anyway.. this is the band that released "Dark Medieval Times" and "The Shadowthrone" some of the greatest BM albums ever and so they deserve my high respect... and some of their newer albums are nothing bad neither, specially Rebel Extravaganza.

I thought Now, Diabolical wasn't a particularly good album but at least it was a change. Clearly the band have modernized their sound which is good seeing as they won't get stale. You couldn't expect another Dark Medieval Times. But still, the album is listenable and I won't be discarding Satyricon any time soon.

Just look at satyricon as two different bands. Just so you wont expect the band to make the same stuff they did 10 years ago and you might end up liking their newer stuff more than you claim to do now. Ofcourse, if youre a bit narrowminded (im NOT saying its a bad thing, im narrowminded myself) i can understand that you have troubles enjoying their newer albums.

In my eyes Now, Diabolica! is an excellent rock album.

How does it have anything to do with being narrowminded or not? You either like new/old or you dont, they are almost different bands. Its like saying you are narrowminded if you like Darkthrone and not Emperor.

It's clear that Satyricon have evolved and i consider their last album a very good one. They're never gonna create something like dark medieval times again because they're different people. And I don't think satyricon ever died ...it's just an other perspective. For example i don't think a person who likes the first band he ever listened will find it so good after 10 years. That's beacause they evolve. So Satyricon can't be damned for this.

Some very good points there..

I don't understand all the fuss about new albums.. Now, Diabolical isn't that bad at all. Do you guys think it's bad black metal wise, because of the more commersial feeling, or just that the music is crap? You can't expect bands to just make masterpiece after masterpiece.

I know I allways judge albums without thinking of previous albums.. If one album is the best album you've ever heard, then it's not smart to compare other albums to it. Then you'll end up with a very small playlist on you're computer after a few years. Of course you can dislike an album just because of the music, but i feel that some people make their choice based on other things than music.. I'm not saying that you should like everything you hear, but at least listen to it with an open mind.. If you think Satyricon is already dead, you obviously are negative to the present band.. Than all the newer albums (whilst the band is dead) are prejudged bad. As we all know, the first impression are important.. Not only date-wise, but in music too.

I like both their old and their new stuff, i have been a bit disappointed with some of their newer stuff (at times)

... but if they hadn't evolved and they'd just released the same album again...and again....and again like so many bands seem to do, then i would have been a lot more disappointed...

Now diabolical is their best album in quite a while and is a great metal album, just not a black metal album

Their newest album is really growing on me now. The title track, 'K.I.N.G.' and 'The Pentagram Burns' especially. It's still a metal album so whoever said it was a good rock album was wrong. This album just requires more honest and thoughtful listening.

This may seem like a contradiction to my previous statement but I heard that they haven't been playing anything of Dark Medieval Times on their live setlist. I'm seeing them live next week and that sort of put a dampener on it. Oh well, maybe they'll change their setlist when they hit London?

Yeah these bands sound has changed, but wouldn't it be pretty lame and boring if every album after Transilvanian Hunger sounded the same? These bands need to try and keep their music fresh while not totally changing, it's hard, I for one really liked the album Chimera that Mayhem released a couple years ago, it was still very dark and sinister and I definitely compared it to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas because De Mysteriis was the first thing I had heard by them and had known best.

As for Satyricon well, I enjoy their new stuff, I haven't listened to all of Now, Diabolical but what I have heard I do enjoy, it definitely has a more groove metal influence in it, but it's good. I like how Satyricon sounds differant than Darkthrone or Emperor, diversity seems some what rare in black metal and that makes the music bland.

It is so damn catchy, industrial-sounding, and catchy. I love it.

It might not be BM, but who gives a fuck? I love this shit, finally.

Diabolical, is a decent album, but i do agree with what many ppl say. It's not a BM album it's rock inspired metal with harsh voals. but a ok listen anyways.

i've never been that into satyricon, i only bought diabolical cause i needed some new music and it was damn cheap. But RE is pretty good.

If you listen to 'Now, Diabolical' (well, "K.I.N.G.", at least) with no expectations for it to be ultra black metal, it's cool. I much prefer 'Dark Medieval Times', though - one of the most atmospheric albums I've heard.

I've read somewhere that Satyr wants his band to play not BM but blackcore, so there's nothing suprising in their evolution, and I enjoy it a lot. Just look: DMT, NDivina, RE, NDiabolical - damn, so different but so great indeed.

Certainly, i'll be in Warsaw on Oct.11!

Seeing them live on the 21st of this month. And I can't wait, for I LOVE all of their stuff, from Dark Medival Times to the modern sounding and very inspired Now, Diabolical, which might be more rock influenced but still is BM at its heart nonetheless.
