Despised Icon - Breaking Up

Official press release

The time has come for us to move on. Some of us have recently reached a new chapter in their lives, starting families, buying houses and pursuing other careers to make it all happen. Writing music, touring and leaving home for months at a time is slowly becoming impossible because of that. We all decided that it'd be best to pull the plug now and end things right.

It's hard to believe we started this band almost 10 years ago already. At first, Despised Icon was mostly just an excuse to hang out, write brutal slam riffs and play local shows once in a while. With your support, we got the opportunity to actually play music for a living, make friends around the world, be MVPs and travel to places we never even dreamed of visiting in our lifetime. Thank you all for some of the best times of our lives.

We're currently working on setting up our final tours in Canada, USA and Europe. Expect to see us in a town near you sometime before the end of the year. If all goes as planned, we'll also be touring Australia and Asia for the first time in the fall. We'll keep you posted on everything. These last shows will be fucking epic! See you guys then!

No big loss, I thought I'd check them out at Hellfest last year and it wasn't my thing.

I better catch them on their last tour! Always putting on a good show. Sad to see em go... Although with their last 2 albums they were kinda going downhill

I certainly didn't expect this, considering how they kind of a recent band. But I guess there are a lot of bands having unexpected split-ups, kind of like the way Xasthur just recently split up. I remember reading an interview that said they would play their style as long as they were around and wouldn't "sell out" by incorporating clean vocals into their music. That gave me something of an impression that they were going to stay around for a while, which proved to be false. Now I'll see what tour dates they have prepared, hopefully as soon as it is announced. I guess they were one of the founders of the deathcore type of music. I can fully respect their decision to split up.

They haven't written anything good since The Healing Process, so no big deal I guess. Betcha their pursuit in other careers is an upcoming rap album xD

Bummer to see these guys hang it up, Day of Mourning showed a lot of promise, and they put on one hell of a live show.

Hmmm, not sure many would agree with you on that one. Ills of Modern Man was brilliant. Personally, i'm gutted...

My reaction ain't THAT big. i've only heard the newest release (day of mourning), and, well, extreme-produced deathC-O-R-E isn't my thing. but i dunno, maybe something they made earlier was better, as you say? or what? i better check something out, i guess...

Maybe for you, but for us in Quebec its a tragedy! They were one of our biggest metal act and they were very original blending Death Metal, Hardcore, Grindcore and even some hip-hop influences in a unique way. Moreover, they are really technically talented musicians and their liveshows were kick ass.

I hate that kind of brainless comments, why do you feel the urge of dissing a band you didn't like when their breaking up! It's like if you were going to the funerals of someone you didn't like and started saying bad things about this person! What is your problem, at least explain yourself. They were among the first band to play Deathcore and they were an awesomme live act. You have the right to hate that type of music, but not to say their universally bad cause no one has universal knowledge of what's good and what's not, it's a question of tastes.

That's funny cause a lot of European metallers I know told me the same about Despised Icon, maybe their style is more adapted to North american metal listeners. But I heard they were doing good in Europe...

Yeah I agree that the last Cryptopsy was lame, but you can't compare a band that was the incarnation of Tech Death and that dropped that style to play a weak combination of aweful clean vocals with Death parts and dissed their old fans in a videoclip to a band that contributed to create a new style and never let it's fans down IMO.

A shame. If there ever was a good part in the deathcore genre - which I imagine must be a very very select group - I guess these guys would belong to that good part.

Maybe my reaction was a little extreme, but I was already angered cause this band was one of my favs and I was shocked by this unfortunate break-up.
