hey ppl,

i only want to express my feelings toward the thing that i loved, lived Metal..

i loved metal alot, and am listening for it for about 4-5 years, it becames a bestfriend.. lot of times i was going back to metal to solve my problems, when i am disturbed, when everybody left me, when i was alone, when i am angry, happy, sad, in love, in hate, in every moment Metal was my faithfull friend..

after any problem the best thing i've done is listening metal, on my first year on the university, i have NO friends else metal..

AND AFTER THAT ALL...!!!!!

i became so wiered about / with it ... i started to obtain alot of albums ... i now have more than 150 album, and hundreds of singles, i know a bit good amount of metal bands, at least in my country and between my friends, i am the most one who knows about metal bands and styles & countries (of course because of this great site) BUTTT..!!!!

actually there is a number of songs i've bought (from a while) and didn't listen yet, many things downloaded and never listened, always needs new stuff, and don't listen well for them, so weired..!!! the music became a less value to me, since i have alot alot stuff... event the good albums, i may not have the time to play them, or i don't play them without a reason, i don't know how do i act with the taste i used to b4... i feel that am listening for it as a habbit not coz i like it... i am searching alot for a band that i don't know, and that to fill up my time, but whithout satisfying results, seems like i know most of the (good) bands of the styles i liked..

even in the forum, i found it too hard to shoot a post.. i know i am not that active member, but i used to post better on the past...

what a problem, seems like i just want new stuff, and get bored from them just when i put my hands on them even if without listening ...

ppl say something please, i can't understand the situatution..!!!

Well if you're bored of metal already I can suggest to you to look even deeper in the underground and there's always upcomming bands so you check them all out aswell. Just keep looking there's no way you could have heard all the metal bands in only five years I've been listening to metal for 7 years now and I still feel that I've barely scratched the surface so just get out there and look for more bands because there's always more comming out and there's always a shitload from the past. Also you should try to look into genre's that your not into so much at the moment.

If you're getting tired of metal then feel free to give it a rest. It's probably better than forcing yourself to listen to it when you clearly don't want to. After an absence from metal you might feel a thirst to listen to it again and it'll be back to normal. The other result is that you discover something else that you find better than metal. If so, it's great thet you've broadened your horizons. There is no wrong answer.

i completely understand what you are saying
sometimes i feel like i am listening to something just because i can, out of habbit..
i dont feel like that all the time though, heavy metal is my life

i hardly have any friends either now. metal is always there for me when i am angry or happy or whatever
i mean i own a stupid amount of albums now. i must have somewhere around 500 albums or something like that. i am always buying them off the internet
probably for something to do seeing as i dont have many friends around here to do stuff with

i think you just need to do some good hard thinking
think about what you really want..
friends.. partner.. just to socialise in general.. whatever.. and then you just need to think how you are going to do it
try going a while without listening to metal. either dont listen to music at all or try a different genré or something like that and then go back to metal later and see how you feel about it all later

but whatever - dont worry, i know exactly what you mean!

I say, listen to some classical music. Seriously.

EDIT when I'm bored of metal, I usually listen to some psihedelic stuff or post rock (Godspeed etc)

Are anything. I sometimes listen to Reggae. Simply because I want something else then some freak screaming into my ears. I think that no-one can escape the feeling you have. It might be earlier reached for some, but everyone will have a moment when they think: No, just not this time.

Then, don't worry to give it a break or a rest, because the feeling will come back. And if not.. well, does it matter? Does it matter if you switch tastes? As long as you do what you like and what makes you happy, it should be ok..

I never get bored of metal since there are such a big variety in the genre. Say that I am tired of Morbid Angel or Death, then I just listen to some Nightwish or Apocalyptica.

But Daru Jericho had a really good suggestion which I think you should listen to.

As said by the above: just try different genres or another type of music. When I don't listen to metal, I'm very fond of Psy-trance/Goa or Banging-Trance. It's totally different and therefore IMO great to get your mind away from metal

Oh I have been in your situation too, but I solved it quite easy, I broadened my horizon.

When I was younger the only thing I knew was black metal, I also enjoyed some gothic metal, but that was it. I think, after 2 years of screaming, primitivity and darkness from the black metal scene I got kinda bored with it. There were bands I still followed, because they are very precious to me, but I stop following the less important bands. To me, there was quite a musical break then.

However, things changed when I became more open-minded towards music and tried other genres. I explored more doom metal, became more open about gothic metal, and digged deep into the Japanese Rock/Visual Kei scene. I discovered new music, and that refreshed my interest in music. There was something to discover again.

After hearing these other genres I also regain my interest in black metal. Now I know which black metal bands are interesting, and which bands are worth my attention. I try all their albums, and even so now and then I try a new black metal band.

Anyway, my point is(just as some other people in this topic), listen to different genres. Only metal is repetitive. You will appreciate metal more after discovering there is also other very enjoyable music. However, I cannot help you with what kind of music you should try. Because anything could be interesting for you. Just try some stuff till you find something you like

You don't have to listen to music even. Get a hobby or something. Become an artist or something like that. I dunno, lol. I do mainly listen to metal, but sometimes I'll listen to some good non-mainstream Alternative music.

You'll probably want to go back to listening to metal later. Or just do what some people have suggested and listen to some metal and other music at the same time.

A friend of mine who is 33 now doesn't listen to as much metal lately, but he listens to some old school stuff (just not as much) and he listens to modern stuff, a fair bit of Industrial Metal and Industrial Music, as well as Alternative music and Ultra Bass stuff.

Ive been listening to metal for about 5 years now... and yes i can see that alot of newer bands a "copies of older bands" or a combination of two. It is rare to find new unique bands. But they are around. But as someone previously posted "You need to look more underground" because the unique stuff dosn't get the publisity

but i think this persons issue here isnt how underground or unknown the music he is listening to is
i think the issue here is other parts of his life that may be missing, and so turning to metal almost as an instinct now when he normally maybe wouldnt listen to so much

Baz Anderson, friend i think you're right, maybe there is something missing in my life and i can't catch what exactly is it, when i am alone, i just think alot with the feelings of fear.. fear from what? NOTHING!!!!!!!

if metal then is off i turn it on, if it is on am disturbed of what am listening , that i became feeling everything is repeated and very known to me even i don't know it ever, or disturbed from reasons i posted b4..

but friends
thank you the max for your posts .. big thanks for you ALL ... you all gave me good feelings, and good solutions, at least you showed me that things like this is happening with you & others, gave me confidence [really am talking, not joking]

maybe the best & the hardest choice was to give it a rest, also i may try some other genres in metal , thrash maybe, or any else.. OR i might will try some pop music or let me say some arabic songs which is a genre that i haven't liked b4, but i do know there are many good songs on it..!!!!!
and about classical ... this one is a good solution too

Thanx all for the advices

I usually take like a week, and stop listening to metal, and listen to other genres like classic rock. Shit like Allman Brothers, James Gang, Lynard Skynard, and Rainbow.

I do this often. I get bored of Metal so I will totally absorb myself in another genre then have an enjoyment for that genre, but I have always come back to Metal. I've done it with Post Rock, Hardcore, Punk, Gothic Rock, Progressive Rock, and other things like Folk and Electronica. If anything, listening to Metal helps me find other genres to listen to.

I can only agree with the genre switching techniques people have mentioned. Its nice to listen to most types of Metal just for the range of styles, like i listen to something from Emperor, then after perhaps Edenbridge? Edenbridge is so calming and always relaxes my mood. If i get burnt out from Metal, i listen to classic rock or classical music. I think i have solved my problem from getting tired from metal. One thing i havent solved is why the fuck i keep buting band shirts, i have 30! LOL

Yeah there is no problem taking a break, expanding your horizons musically is good because you can better differentiate one sound from another, and have a more diverse taste in music. I didn't stop listening to metal altogether, but for about a year I was listening to a minimal amount of metal when I moved to the US and began primarily listening to more electronic based music like industrial, and hell I enjoy classical music too.

This is something that happens to me too: many times I listen to metal more like a habit, like if I was addicted to it.
Around 4 months I decided to stop listening to metal for 6 days and it was good, I didn't miss it so much. Now I try to listen classical music first, and then I listen Industrial music, rock, trip hop, electronica, and even reggae, but lately it has been quite difficult for me because I'm already totally used to metal though I know it's really good to listen other music
Or something I do sometimes is not listening music, just silence. it's useful to rest for some time and think in other things.

What Necromancer_S said is completly true: get a hobby or something like that. I'll try reading more often

Well nice thread as always dear , and yeah I agree with most of you ...First of all don't worry is normal , tell me about it ...I think it happens to all of us from time to time , is not that we are tired of the music because we all love metal , or maybe is not that we listen for habit noooo metal is a wonderful thing that has fullfill many things in our lives , and that ring us together here everyday in Ms or in different places ...but well is your brain ..sometimes your mind need variety actually all the time , because our brains are like uhmm I don't know sponges ?at least mine ..is so hungry all the time ..like I said what you need is variety or give it a rest ...I been listening to metal since wow since I was little because of my family and stuff , my cousins were involved in bands and my uncle , and well my parents listen to rock , and my brother anyways I was always exposed ..but well I try to look deeper , I understand you completly but well try listening to some classical or opera for a while , try all the types that are in classical and stuff or listen to New age or world music , expand your horizons , this is rather a positive thing , I have never share the idea of limiting yourself with one type of music , of course I respect that if you want to do it , but music is a wonderful thing , and everythingis connected , go and explore and you'll see then you'll understand metal more , or any type of music , music in endless , is immortal just discover how big it is and keep discovering ... have a good day

I just came back from a break from metal and honestly I love it (metal) now more than ever before. I'm now getting into heavier stuff and I'm really enjoying it. If you want to take a break from metal than go ahead, there's nothing wrong with that. Plus I listen to my friends taste in music (reggae) on occasion to have a different genre and so I can chat with her about artist she likes. Ask some friends who are into different music for a recommendation. You might be surprised to find you enjoy the music too.

your situation isn't particularly peculiar.

i burn myself out on genres every couple of years.

between 1986 and 1993 I listened to a lot of punk. But I enjoyed the old 'masters' and wasn't too keen on most of the new developments (being stationed overseas was during 91-93 made this even more difficult).

between 1990 and 1995 I couldn't find enough metal, from thrash bands to the old Earache and Roadrunner death metal bands. I remember the day when the earache label on a cd case (remember when they came in those cardboard box sleeves you could tape up to your wall?) was a sure mark of a quality cd. Shortly 1995 it just got boring... all of the (US) big four of thrash had put out some boring albums recently, i didn't like the direction machinehead or pantera had started taking, new death metal outside of Morbid Angel wasn't really doing it for me.

I had listened to my old cd's so many times, I didn't get the same adrenaline rush I used to.

So I pretty much stopped listening to metal for a good six years or so. At least, nothing new outside of those cd's which I possessed. I started listening to a lot more punk (my then GF, now wife's brother was in a band, helped turn me on to some decent stuff)

Around 2003 it was VH-1's "Most Metal Moments" which resparked my interest in metal and ignited a curiousity into black metal (which I intentionally ignored in the early 90's upon seeing folks aping for photos in Metal Maniacs) ... since then I've probably added a good 100 metal albums to my collection. (A partial list of my collection is here: http://www.recordnerd.com/lists/oldbittercraig/ )

My advice would be to experiment with other forms of music - see what else floats your boat. Shuffling through different genres on a daily/weekly basis will help preserve your enjoyment of all while helping prevent any particular genre from becoming stale too quickly.

Last week I couldn't get enough of Napalm Death's "SCUM", an album I hadn't listened to in over four years. The week before it was the early 80's english Ska band Madness. Who knows what band or genre I will get stuck in my head this week.

Just mix it up and enjoy.

well, the first step to solving the problem is knowing what you will listen to instead. Very Very Recently i sort ov stopped listening to a significant number ov extreme music cuz i have been developing a new point ov view, a new philosophy and i have changed so i therefore cannot relate.

Well if i'm not listening to metal, i am listening to Techno/Electro-Industrial, Dark Ambient, Indie Rock or The Doors (who are Classic Rock).

Just find something what suits you and is coincidently not metal
