it is supposedly better sound but i challenge anyone to tell the difference between an LP and a cd of the same album. its more to do with having big artwork in a sexy gatefold sleeve which is nice but is all rather superfluous. i only buy vinyls of stuff that is unavilable on cd or tape. the only other useful formats of music are cassette (for the different sound that is suited to some releases) and mp3 (for the convenience).

LPs have an awsome sound quality. and when I say awsome, I mean the same sound you get from a winamp with 100 plugins and such. a simple audio cd does not sound like an LP. believe me. plus you can hear all the backward messages

i thought it would have been impossible for an LP to have a higher quality then a CD after all when an album is recorded, it is recorded digitally on a computer, and then from there mastered and put onto CDs i dont see what an LP can get extra.. i think anything that might make someone think an LP sounds of a higher quality is in the mind

because the LP is analogue wheras the cd's sound is made from processing the data on the disc. though vinyls decrease in quality with use. its completly stupid though. the difference between a cd and vinyl is sp incredibly insignificant. its funny really because i know someone who said they were waiting for the vinyl version of the new akitsa album because it sounds better than the cd but he actually downloads almost all his stuff anyway which has a much lower quality of sound. but then that just confirms that people buy vinyl for scene status and cool packaging (and a free sticker with the die-hard version!!!1)

Why they release them? Because some fans might have lp-players? I don't hear the sound difference, but then again from no album I own both an lp and a CD.

LP sound is IMO much cooler than CD sound ... but still, I also think it is a little unecessary to release LP versions of bands new albums.

For the same reason why digipacks and slipcases are released: they look cooler - you gotta admit opening the gates of Possessed's "Beyond The Gates" feels grand - and due to the limitation they are quite interesting for collectors. I myself prefer LP's over CD's since I listen to my music mostly on PC and MP3 player anyway and buy originals just for the artwork (and to support the bands, of course).

Vinyls are real items, whenever you play them, look at them or use them in any way. I personally only collect cool-looking picture discs (which I could never give up btw) but can totally understand why people want to buy vinyls, they are a whole lot more personal. Even the cover art is more like an artwork instead of that minimal picture that cd has. A small trivia too - vinyls last forever when treated properly, cds don't. I am not sure of the word in English but oxygen starts affecting their sound over the years.

vinyls don't last forever. they gradually decrese in quality with use and even if you don't use them, they eventually start to go mouldy

Everything will wear out in time, my point was that vinyls can last longer than cds do, and that is a fact.

I'd doubt that. But I don't know it for fact, so I'll shut it.

well, I can truly understand why people buy and release vinyls. I myself haven't bought a metal lp so far, but we have a pretty good collection of vinyls at home (from my parents) and I love listening to it. I prefer listening to the LP than to the cd to a certain degree. I think that LPs sound more "alive". It might sound stupid, but little sound changes due to dust make the music more interesting and besides that, after half an hour, you have to get up and turn the LP, so it also keeps you healthier than cds anyway, what I wanted to say is that I will always buy cds of bands that I truly like because there's no way that I can get vinyls on my ipod or listen to them in my room, but if there is a really cool LP, I might also buy the vinyl just for the sake of owning vinyls...

Natural sound is analog. So is vinyl. The sound on a CD is a highly compressed, digitized version of the natural sound. This means that basically, the CD sound contains less sound information, since basically what happens is that "snapshots" are taken of the actual, analog sound. Since the maximum number of snapshots that can be taken per minute is limited, part of the sound information is lost. This makes vinyl recordings sound more "real" than CD, and have more of a live feel, if you will. Just like with, say, a fine wine vs. cheap plonk, the layman might not hear (taste) any great difference between the two, but it's undeniably there to the trained ear (palate). But it's true that for most listeners, the difference is entirely negligeable. I think besides this, though, other reasons why vinyl is still being produced are simple nostalgia (metalheads especially tend to be far more conservative than they are usually willing to admit) and the fact that they make great collector's items. And it's true that while all sound carriers deteriorate over time and with use, well-cared for vinyl has a much longer life than its reputation in this area seems to suggest. As for CD's, seems many people still think they are virtually indestructible and will last forever. Go ahead and burn some CD's on your PC and try to listen to them 10 or 15 years from now. CDr's especially have a surprisingly limited life span (in many cases years rather than decades, depending on the quality of the CDr).

Account deleted Written by Immortalist on 14.10.2006 at 18:15 It is true! LP's are made "simplyer" technical method but they are much more resistant than any CD's. Also reproduction of sounds is more natural from LP. Note that shortcut name of CD means: Compact Disc. Since when something "compact" is better than "proper" size and quality? I won't even mentioned things such as: better, bigger LP covers or enjoy of useing it... Also one fact is important tome: note that every, following music "carrier" is worst than predecessor: "big" spool magnetophone is older and better than "normal" cassette. Same thing with LP's and CD's. CD's better than MP3... Technology is more set to cheaper solutions or more popular/trendy... not better. Many old, better technical solutions were wasted - in my opinion.

I personally canot stand records simply because of the quality. I have a lot of metal LPs and then I have the same vinyl on CD and it obviouly sounds so much better. I went to a local CD superstore here and apparently they are making a lot of recent released into vinyl which is pretty interesting...

I think they have some specific reason: they try to remember a dead age in metal merchandising (because of collectionists), It's just a way to get more money with the unreleased or live songs n' that stuff. That's all.

Hmmm, quite an old post at this point. Just thought it was kind of funny, considering that vinyl sales have gone through the roof since the last comment on this thread. Traditionalists get tired of all these teeny boppers downloading music, and head in the complete opposite direction.
