What strange is being this year, it is remarkable the low ratings just this year in the top 20 of 2011, and more when you compare it with the trajectory of all tops 20 through of these 11 years here in MetalStorm, really poor. Maybe the legion of Septicflesh's fanatics puting low ratings everywhere (647 votes got their last album so far, not bad, not bad)??? Or perhaps this is a really, really bad year for metal in true??? or simply it is logic when MetalStorm has grown in popularity year after year, therefore you get more users currently, and you know what it means respect to the variety of possible votes when you have more users (seems that each year from 2000 little by little has been dropping the album rating in general) Or what the fuck occurs with the music Metal currently, when you never has had so much variety as there is today in metal music in general (it has to be good, at least for me yes), but that on the other hand can be another reason that explain these low ratings currently (more variety, tastes more disperse, votes more disperse). Well, what do you think really about this matter?

Since when is 8.3 or 8.5 low? The higher number of people that vote the more accurate the ratings will become. Simple.

Well, i have been doing the same thoughts for time to time. For me the truth is between Marcel and Vikcen. I take as an example Septicflesh's album as it has already been mentioned: 1)I don't think it deserves a 10, but really find it cool. SO, i don't mind seeing many people giving it a 10, though i disagree a bit. 2)on the other hand i totally despise people voting it (and many many other albums) with "1" just to see it falling in the ranks. it's stupid. the truth is that only a small amount of these people believe that this album deserves a "1". 3)at the same time as this album get's more popular, it's a fact that there will be many people to listen it who won't like it. they will listen it just cause they see it in the top-20. so, to make a conclusion, as MS is growing by the years, phrase "3" will be the reason why probably each year's top-20 will have a bit lower ratings than the previous year's top-20. phrase "2" is the reason why THIS YEAR'S top-20 has sooooo low ratings. this will happen every year (with the way that MS operates atm). the only nice thing is that after some years the top-20 of 2011 for example will be ok (many "1" and "10" will be deleted) as most of the vote abusers will be deleted from the site (most of them create an account once and don't ever log in again).

Don't see how the low ratings would affect anything really, there will still be top albums of the year. Not really sure why it should be bothering people, the music is still there, its not like the lower ratings are detrimental to the quality in any way.

08.12.2011 - 21:09 Written by Vikcen on 08.12.2011 at 20:44 Ignoring what you were trying to accomplish with that, I personally find threads like this unimportant. What happened to the ratings? More users joined. More vote abusers joined. More butthurt fanboys joined. With fewer users handing out high marks before the influx of users, Top 20 releases were scored on average a lot higher. Now, with more users and more chaotic voting, the average vote goes down (because more people tank with 1s as a form of abuse than people raise with 10s as abuse). All in all, album votes are ridiculous on this site - because there's no program for weight distribution. I mean pretty much every album has an average score of 80%. Does every album really deserve what is the North American equivalent of an A- grade? I don't think so.

More people voting = more popular voting. The most votes are going to the most listened (so more commercial/popular, less extreme/difficult) albums. Ratings are there for the ones that find them important. That's it. I don't care about them, but I don't mind them either. If I must believe the ratings on MS, I have baaaad taste in metal 'cause I don't like most albums in these top lists Sometimes it's fun to see the vote abuse so I'd say: vote yourself to death and have fun with it!

80% is an A Minus... man, when i've bitched about grade inflation i wasn't bitching enough. for me, it's been heavy on mediocrity and light compared to recent years on albums at the top. lots of 7s and 8s, lots of all time terrible albums, and far less in the 9-10 department for me.

08.12.2011 - 22:38 Written by Troy Killjoy on 08.12.2011 at 21:09 Yes, this is the kind of answer that i like about the topic. Precisely if you read the topic, you will see that i wrote various possible opinions about it (four in total), so what i'm looking for is variety of diverse opinions, the people are free to expose the opinion that they consider about the topic (and also it can be an opportunity to have a personal vision of how has been this year, and comparing with other years, out or inside of MS) By the way, i agree with what you said.

About the 80% average rating, at the end you could get this equivalence as guide (would be named the "MS rating", calculated automatically, and also there would be to consider the number of votes in the formula, and some other things =)): <8 = worst ever 8.1 = pure shit 8.2 = very bad 8.3 = bad 8.4 = not good 8.5 = average 8.6 = good 8.7 = very good 8.9 = excelent >9 = perfect

Low ratings? Almost every album on this site is massively inflated in terms of rating, it really is quite misleading.

I'll go out there and claim that after the vote abusing quiets down a bit, we'll have a pretty fair image, but the rates aren't all that high or low, they're fairly expected. I'm not bitter yet as some people with oh-so-high-standards are (if you look at my rates you'll see there's no abundance of 10's nor <5's, but I won't hesitate to give an 8 or 9 if I really enjoy it), so I'll also claim that there is a lot of good releases in my favorite metal genre, and it can't be the isolated case, so 2011 is overall a decent year for metal. Had some epic failures, which succeeded in amusing the community as well. It only depends on how deep you're going to dig to find good releases, as a lot of them come from the underground.

11.12.2011 - 07:19 Written by Vikcen on 08.12.2011 at 23:21 Oh man, that's funny. I thought it was universal thought that the ratings on MS are on a downward slope starting in like 2008 er whatever. Next year, I garantee the ratings will be lower than this year. A helpful hint: An album with a rating of 8.1 in 2011 = an album before 2007 with a rating of 8.5er6.
