The guitar-riffs are rather simple (as I've tried to play some of Deftones' songs) but they are very effective and atmospheric. Long distorted riffs mixed with some experimental guitar-playing and the result is rather amazing. The drums are never too overplayed, always just backing up, giving power when needed and taking it slow when wanted. That goes for the bass as well - giving depth to the sounds of Deftones - lines that work silently with the listeners ears and sometimes attack from behind, just to leave 'the victim' floating among the tunes and sounds. And the final push comes from the digital tunes and turntable sounds that are hidden amongst everything else - comes to connect the listener with Deftones.
Now about the album specifically. It is true, 'White Pony' is said to be the best Deftones album. With songs like 'Digital Bath', 'Knife Party', 'Passanger' and 'Pink Maggit' the album sinks into the mind of the listener. And while these are the songs that make one listen to the album again and again then after a while one may find oneself humming songs like 'Change (In the House of Flies)', 'Teenager' and 'RX Queen' - they just need a bit more time to digest them.
What's interesting about this album is that it has rather many 'limited' and 'enhanced' versions. While the original cover is dark-grey with the white pony on it, there are also covers in blue, red and white - each of them having a slightly different tracklist. I especially like the version with 'Back to School (Mini-Maggot)' on it - so to say a follow-up track for 'Pink Maggit'.
The whole album has this 'Passanger' effect, I can say. It goes on and on, and you actually never want it to end. 'Now to calm me, Take me around again, Don't pull over , This time won't you please, Drive faster!'
And again.. And again..
