I'm doing a school project where I'm trying to find the correlation between age and how much someone likes metal, and vice versa. Part of my study will include survey(s) asking metalheads how old they are. I thought I'd start here, since this is one of the most commonly used metal forums on a site totally devoted to metal.

I'm not specifying what "metal" is, because my teacher isn't going to understand what poser metal vs. real metal is, and TBH I think it's a load of elitist bull.

If you have any comments, post them. (Yes, I included an extremely wide range, because you never know. There's always that one 90-year-old who is tech-savvy and likes metal...... :)

I'd like to get as many results as possible, for as accurate results as possible. And put serious answers. Please and thank you.

UP THE HORNS

EDIT:

Thank you guys for responding. I'll keep this poll bumped until Dec. 7, when I'll have to turn in my raw data.

I realized before I even made this poll that there might be a higher percentage of teenagers and 20-somethings on here than at metal gigs, but I'm going to be doing surveys both online and in real life, this is just one of them.

I know that you can see someone's age on the side ... but only if they show it lol. Some people are private about that. And the main thing is that it's so damn much easier to just get all the voters to come here than to look at and record the age of every account I find, keeping track of which ones I've already looked at....

27 years old from South Texas. Been listening to metal since 2001. Started off with Rob Zombie's Hellbilly Deluxe and have just fallen deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole and today I listen to many genres from industrial a la old Rob Zombie (and White) to nu-metal a la Slipknot (old) to cheesy power metal a la Dream Evil to evil black metal a la Negator to brutalest of death a la Putridity to weird avant garde a la Unexpect as well as classics like 80s thrashers Slayer and so on and so forth. Don't care much for doom, stoner or sludge though. Hope this helps ya out!

Worth noting that the average age of people on metal forums are younger than most metalheads. Most people on metal forums tend to be in their early-mid twenties, while when I go to shows, the average age seems to be in the mid 30's.

Yes. Applies for the Internet in general. Your results will say as much (or more) about the average userbase of Internet communities as they say about metal fans. Different forums also have different age profiles; going to a smaller, more exclusive forum based around a webzine or label will probably have older members. The big Finnish metal media, Imperiumi, forums seem to be mostly populated by old bitter men, among them a lot of Finnish musicians, reporters, record label people and gig organizers. MS doesn't have such a userbase, really, it's mostly young fans.

Damn, that is long. By the way what's your musical evolution. I'm quite interested in that actually.
I think there was a thread about that, not sure if you posted in it.

I'm 25 and I started listening to metal at 16. I also agree with a few people above who have stated that you can't judge the relation of age vs metal on a forum as it will be a younger age group. Your best bet is to go to shows and conduct your survey there.
In India you have mostly a younger age group at metal gigs, very few over metalheads over 40.

You could just start looking at the user accounts on this page one after another in order to find out how old the users are, instead of waiting for us to tell you and btw i think Void Eater is absolutely right and one of the reasons why more teens are on forums and more older people on live shows is that kids use computers more often than older people (obviously)....so the info you get here or on any other metal site/forum won't be 100% accurate

don't laugh... it was KISS' disco song, "I was made for loving you" that got him hooked.

was Quiet Riot "Cum On Feel The Noiz" (or maybe "Looks That Kill" by Motley Crue) that got me in '83. Suicidal Tendencies got me interested in punk in 1984/5 after seeing "Institutionalized" on an MTV special in which they let Weird Al pick the vids.

was mostly punk/new wave in HS despite liking Maiden and some thrash. Was '90 before I started with more metal-focus, and I almost skipped thrash (yeah, I'd heard the stuff, primarily the big four), and it was the DM explosion that set me off. Read an article in Spin magazine, found Napalm Death "Harmony Corruption" on tape for $2.99 on the base exchange, and was off to the races.

was lucky enough to be in Florida in 90-91, caught a couple random DM gigs, before moving to Guam. the Air Force Exchange carried pretty much everything Earache put out, i bought it all. Had to pay $18.99 in town for Roadrunner releases.

I know, right? Metal's been around for 40 years give or take, so just slap 15+ years on there for the fans who've been listening to it since then. lol
