Oh wow oh my god a tape wow.

I really think it's more of an aesthetic thing for bands than anything else, because I myself haven't really noticed any increase in audio quality when listening to tapes. It's like the whole "vinyl is better than CD" argument, I think it's really just a subconscious thing in peoples' heads that kind of comes about from that idea of upholding a tradition.

Is there anyone that's under the misapprehension that tapes are better quality than CDs? I thought it was a given that it's a novelty, collectors item in this day and age.

Tapes = analogue format
Vinyls = analogue format
Cds = digital format
mp3s = digital format

Also it says that it is mastered specifically for analogue format. So I guess the sound quality will be different from the cd version

Tapes is never about better quality, because tapes are totally inferior to cd and vinyl and such.
It is about aesthetics and them being a lot cheaper than cd's and vinyl.

Not a single tape seller, buyer, collector is under that misapprehension.

I didn't think so. That's like saying VHS is better quality than DVD.

Indeed. It's a tape so it wears down when being played due to the tapeheads.
Vinyl, for example, doesn't wear down when the stylus has the right pressure and such.

And that tapes are about aesthetics mainly is obvious by the fact that almost all tape labels provide a download code with the tape.

Lots of labels also do the download thing for vinyl.

I agree that for tapes, it might be more a aesthetic thing as the sound will be inferior. But I don't get people that think it is so for vinyl too, clearly superior to cds.

You do realise it was totally sarcastic ? There is no increase in audio quality at all with a tape.

Vinyl really isn't superior to cd's. It isn't really inferior either, btw. It is totally different and cannot be compared.
Vinyl is superior when it comes to skipping. When a cd skips it is just stuck and will never play on whereas with a recorda tiny tap against the stylus is enough for it to continue playing.

Both of you should be thankful then that you're not surrounded by some of the pretentious hipsterism of the South Florida underground.

I don't know.... but I really have the impression vinyl sounds more "deep" (like more layered or something) when I play both a vinyl and cd version from a same album.

It's probably the sound set-up I have, or just an impression, who knows

I think that's a convenience thing, you can't carry your vinyls around and listen to them on the bus (so, not a sound quality issue).

If anything, there's a decrease in audio quality. Why anyone would/could claim there's an increase in audio quality is beyond me. Like Joe says, it's like saying VHS is superior to DVD.

Why wouldn't you be able to compare it in terms of audio quality? I don't see why that wouldn't be possible.

The only thing where vinyl is definitely better is the huge cover art
But yeah, overall they're just different. I did hear somewhere that vinyls last longer though, but I'm not sure whether that's true.

Yes, I don't really understand why this anything more than a novelty. I'd rather have a 24-bit / 96 kHZ High Definition Studio remaster, but this album would sound good on any format. An educational cheapskate audiophile article is in the works...
