Children Of Bodom - Guitarist Roope Latvala Leaves The Band

Unexpected news come from the Finnish metallers Children Of Bodom camp, as long-time guitarist of the band, Roope Latvala, decided to leave the band. This comes at a time when the band is working on their new album which is already mixed and mastered at this point.

This message was posted on the band's Facebook page: "Dear COB Hatecrew, we need to share something with you at this point. Our friend, brother, and a guitar player for 12 years, Roope, is no longer with the band. As we parted ways with no bad blood, we wish him nothing but the best and thank him for allowing us to share the last 12 years of our lives with him. Hope you know that this will not affect the upcoming shows or the new album as we recorded it as a four piece and it is already mixed, mastered, heavy as shit and ready to go! Enough said, See you soon!"

All the best to Roope Latvala on his future endeavors.

God damn! Roope was damn good guitar player and I'm sad to see him go. I doubt Kouppala will want to return. I hope the new guitar player brings cool new ideas and a new energy to Bodom.

Good luck Roope!

Wouldn't matter, Alexi writes 90-98% of all their material anyway.

My guess is that they'll continue as a 4 piece for a while, it's probably gonna be hard to bring someone in after nearly 20 years of camaraderie between all those guys.

Wow? I guess I will just wait and see what happens. Not sure if they are going to replace Roope or just go on with the remaining members. Both are plausible.

Certainly not good news but I can't see how this is a big loss since, as someone already wrote, Alexi writes most of the material.

Probably Roope must be sticking his stick in Alexi's way and both fought and tussle happened.

Like as been said, Alexi write most of the stuff and so this time, he could threw his one crew out of Bodom(like what happened in Slipknot - Joey quit because of indifferences of opinion in new album making).

This.

From the sounds of it I'm guessing the same. The message indicates the album was already recorded as a 4-piece, likely meaning that Roope left before they even started working on the new material.

Not necessarily true. Roope joined the band almost immediately after Alexander left because they needed a guitarist quick who could learn and play Alexander's parts in time for a tour that was only a few weeks away. Back then they were nowhere near as big as they are now, so it will be even easier for them to find a temp live guitarist with all the band, PR and label connections they have now.

The real question is "Are they going to hire a second guitarist at all, do like Nevermore and have a revolving door of live guitarists, or do like Behemoth and find a no-name second guitarist to keep on retainer strictly for touring?" Or better yet "Who really cares?"

I wouldn't be surprised if he left cuz Alexi was too controlling. But realistically he probably just left cuz he was tired of touring.

I'd like to think that maybe a Stone reunion could be in the works.

Yeah, all of that is true. I'd put my money on them doing this but yeah, haven't really been a 'fan' of the band since Bloodrunk so not too invested in what happens... but still I'm here... I guess CoB is just one of those bands that had such a big influence on me in my early days of metal listening that it's hard not to follow the band's goings on even when it doesn't really affect me lol.

And Blabbermouth is reporting that Janne's brother, Antti, is going to fill in on their upcoming tour.

Should we go ahead and start a pool to see if they hire him on full time after the tour?

Yeah, it indeed will be Antti Wirman handling shows in the summer. They played a secret gig at Tavastia last night.

Didn't Alexander's departure coincide with their decline in quality? Wonder if fresh blood will bring some of the magic back.

Fair enough. But I guess it's Antti Wirmen filling in for a bit. Warmen is a pretty dope band, I'm down with this.

But I would argue that introducing new people with new ideas and energy can still have an affect on the writing, even if it's mostly Laiho doing the writing. The last 10% could be that push that makes an album an 8 / 10 instead of a 7.

Again, Alexi writes 90-98% of all their material. Alexander only co-wrote 3 songs over their first 4 albums with Alexi taking 100% of all other credits. Personally, I think the change was nearly entirely due to Alexi's personality changing(musical tastes shifted, he got much more into partying, egotistical etc.) around the time of HCDR rather than anything to do with Alexander.

Yeah well it is possible but I just don't think it's likely. I'd be all for it if it did turn out that way but just not really counting on it.

Sounds amazing! I really do wonder if Kim will ever be up for that. I sure hope so. In the meantime, I'm glad to hear of Antti's addition. I'd hate to see CoB go away or be down a guitarist.

That's the thing about songwriting credits, though. They rarely (if ever) reflect how a song took shape when it came to be recorded, such as tweaks to the arrangement and guitar ad-libs. The fact Kuoppala got any co-writing credits at all suggests Lord Laiho was a bit more open to his input.

True Roope got one as well (for "Bastards Of Bodom") but I sense that started out as a Sinergy track, seeing as Kim Goss wrote the lyrics.

Well, Alexi also states in interviews he writes 90%+ of material and isn't very open to other members input that doesn't fit the bodom sound, which I'd assume is why most the members have side projects, like Warmen. True, Alexander has gotten most credit of any other member but 3 co-written creds over 4 albums is still not enough to convince me he had much to do, at least directly, with the change of sound in the band.

On top of all that Angel has said, Alexander was present for HCDR and it was the first shift in the simplified direction. Also, Alexi has also stated in interviews that the style shift was due to him being tired of writing such complex music, he just wanted to start playing simpler, more commercially accessible music.
