Dream Theater - Unveil New Album Cover And Tracklist

Little by little, we begin to know more about Dream Theater's upcoming album. Titled The Astonishing, the prog metal masters have now revealed its cover explaining that it introduces the album's retro-futurist dystopian setting. Take a look at it below alongside the tracklist. It remains to be seen if the album will be astonishing or not, but the band will perform it in full on a European tour next year with shows in England, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland and Denmark already booked.

Here is what the band said about the cover: "This album cover extends an ominous invitation into the retro-futurist dystopian setting of The Astonishing. The deceptively beautiful yet chillingly totalitarian image is a bold harbinger of the visual components and ideas presented by the sonic story that is our most ambitious creative work to date. We are very proud to soon bring you... The Astonishing."

I enjoyed the last few albums, but this looks like a nice change of pace... a Sci-Fi concept album. Looks like a bit of thought has gone into it judging by the content of the website.

34 tracks! I'm hoping that comprises of standard DT 7-10 minute songs intermixed with short instrumental interludes. I don't think a full album of 3-4 minute tracks would suit their music.

Not yet, they say "early next year" so my guess is around the time of the European tour, February or March.

I completely agree. It's good to see that they're willing to do another concept album, and a double one at that.

It could maybe be something like what they did with Six Degrees, where the tracks would just float seemlessly into one another.

They almost beat Ayreon when it comes to the number of songs on one album.
As almost always, the cover is terrible.

No doubt cover art is dreadful but 34 songs?

That will clock 7-8 mins each with guitar chords crisping for average 2-3 mins.

Last album was satisfactory. This time they should craft more nicely.

I actually like the cover of Black Clouds & Silver Linings and Awake. They are pretty similar.

But yes, not the best part of DT. I'm excited to see this concept come to life in the music.

People HATED ADTOE? What the fuck? I think it's one of their best albums. I can't believe it's their third lowest rated album on here. My guess is the Portnoy fanboys downrated it.

I gotta ask: How so? Something that turns me off to some of their works is how they can be more about technical wankery than actual emotion and melody. On ADTOE, however, virtually every song was insanely catchy, while still maintaining length, solid structures, and plenty of technicality. As the cherry on top, the ballads on that album are probably the most beautiful ballads that DT have written to date. Every track, except for maybe the opening track, is great IMO.

So many poeple hated ADTOE because:
Quote:
songs are a gray mass containing craploads of forced, uninspired instrumental wankery, multiple showoff passages, incredibly drawn out fragments, boring singing and flat, lifeless choruses

This is an excerpt from my review of this album (feel free to read it in its entirety if you want to get mad). Today I'd rate the album even lower. I am a DT fan, but I'm not deaf and I can hear when they suck. ADTOE is DT's worst album, by far.
