The topic you had all been waiting for. First recommendation, the album Spectrum by the band Am I In Trouble? (weird choice for band name, I know). It is progressive, avant-garde, and, at times, black. Early year highlight for me.

Not my style but some of you might enjoy it. Polish heavy metal with some country influences. Only one single available thus far.

And now something more right up my alley... The long awaited debut album by Necromaniac. Black/death/thrash from the UK.

Atmospheric black metal, dungeon synth, folk, all nicely blended with great flow.

2025 starts off with a solid avantgarde/dissonant metal release coming from nowhere, gonna be on my AOTY list:

We get to see lot of female fronted metal bands exhibiting the same style of music, but the execution comes out to be very poor.

This sounds great. Right in my alley.

Steve Wiener from Ashenspire is behind this, so you know it's good.

He's from a band called "Ashenheart".

What a blunder. I have to delete it, it is in the OP.

Battalions Of Fear, Bonded By Blood, and Walls Of Jericho had a baby.

This one leans slightly more towards Blind Guardian in its faster moments, but is solid old school power/speed metal with some occasional blasts and other more aggressive leanings, plus some NWOTHM songs in there too (which I'm less keen on)

Culak - Wayfarer: post-rock/metal with occasional elements of prog, folk and atmo-black. I find it quite stirring at times ("Across The Ocean Gnosis" is a particular highlight, has me thinking at different moments of Pink Floyd, Skyforest and This Will Destroy You); I'd be half-tempted to review it I didn't have so many pending reviews already. The guy behind it seems rather prolific, looks like there were already multiple full-lengths from him in 2024.

Light Dweller - The Subjugate: fairly cacophonic and dissonant death metal, but with some intriguing subtle lighter textures occasionally creeping into the madness. Feels fairly Voidhanger-esque, but is perhaps marginally more approachable than some similar stuff on that label

March Of Scylla - Andromeda: Not on Pelagic Records, but prog/post-metal that wouldn't be out of place - has some djentish moments that take it towards Hippotraktor stylistically

Edit: This is turning out to be a really good release weekend; another good album is this melodeath one with hints of Be'lakor, In Mourning and other such acts. Might end up reviewing all 3 I've shared today tbh, good haul

Also some really tasty proggy sludge/stoner stuff:

New stuff from J.L.(Ὁπλίτης, Vitriolic Sage) explores a little more Avant-Garde Prog-Metal side to his own interest, it even sounds like a Grindcore record (like Effluece stuff) at the start. Sound quality is a bit rough though.

The first single from Mütterlein's upcoming album is massive. For people not familiar with her work: she's french and does a sort of mix between Black and Sludge with an overarching industrial feel. This time the industrial elements are on the forefront and the result is addicting. I'm really excited for the album. (for fans of Neurosis, Godflesh and Blut Aus Nord's industrial work).

Edit: The female vocals in „Breathe - Transcend” were totally unexpected… Gr8 album!
